The Dirty Mac plays “Yer Blues”

Here’s a song I didn’t know of (well, I did when it was a Beatles song), but look at the lineup: Clapton, John Lennon, and Keith Richards on guitar, and Mitch Mitchell on drums.  I had a hard time telling Clapton from his face (where did that ridiculous sweater come from?), but his playing is unmistakable. More on Clapton in tomorrow’s Nooz.

The YouTube notes:

The Dirty Mac performing “”Yer Blues”” from The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus Recorded before a live audience in London in 1968, The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was originally conceived as a BBC-TV special. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, it centers on the original line up of The Rolling Stones — Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman (with Nicky Hopkins and Rocky Dijon) — who serves as both the show’s hosts and featured attraction. For the first time in front of an audience, “The World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band” performs six Stones classics. The program also includes extraordinary performances by The Who, Jethro Tull, Taj Mahal, Marianne Faithfull, Yoko Ono, and The Dirty Mac. A ‘supergroup’ before the term had even been coined, the band was comprised of Eric Clapton (lead guitar), Keith Richards (bass), Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience (drums), and John Lennon on guitar and vocals.

  1. It looks like a rainy night. Chilly? Maybe Clapton borrowed the sweater from his girlfriend? I like how calm Clapton is. Great music.

    1. I was thinking his g.f. knitted it for him, and so he better wear it.
But I would totally wear the sh*t out the pants that Richards has.

  2. “The Rolling Stones’ Rock and Roll Circus” was shelved for many years as the group thought their performance was sub-par. For me, the other highlight is The Who’s performance of their “mini-opera,” “A Quick One, While He’s Away,” which The Stones allowed them to include on one of the best rock docs ever: “The Kids Are Alright.”. It’s amazing.

  3. I got the VHS tape of the show aboiut 25 years ago, but also saw the Who’s segment when I caught The Kids Are Alright at a drive-in theater in 1979. That film made me a big fan of the Who. Yeah yeah, well after they were past their prime. But then I also became a Beatlemaniac years after they broke up. Loved the Stones too. I.didn’t think their performances were all that bad, although Brian Jones looked rather bedraggled, a bit all too stoned! But A Quick One and Yer Blues were the highlights for me. Also liked the Stones’ Salt of the Earth.

  4. Have to agree with this quote about Clapton’s guitar playing: “I honestly think I am just about as good as him. And I am terrible.”

And this quote: “Clapton is just the most baffling famous muso at all. Everything he does is mediocre. Not even spectacularly bad that its interesting just mediocre and bland.”

  5. That sweater is fabulous, IMEO. It pairs perfectly with the orange shirt under it, so it appears planned and well fit. The granny squared are a classic crochet pattern, so I suspect it was made for him as an act of love. Bravely done.
