Photos of readers

Cate Plys (right below) sent a photo from Chicago, and what distresses me is that I didn’t know about that taco truck! Cate’s caption:

Well, why not–I can’t send any good wildlife photos because my phone takes lousy pictures and I no longer have a real camera. So, here’s a photo of myself and my husband at our favorite taco joint in Chicago, which happens to be in Bridgeport, which is good because it’s close by and as you can see from the picture, we are both White Sox fans. Although my husband is also (gasp) a Cubs fan. Some would find Bridgeport an exotic location, for what that’s worth.

Of course I asked her if that truck was her favorite taco joint, and this is the reply (Chicago residents: take note).

Yes, Antique Taco—it’s at 35th and Morgan. It’s in an old drive-in place (that didn’t make it in the picture) with a huge parking lot, so in the summer they have a giant outdoor space to eat where the trailer is parked. It’s not actually a taco truck, but they do use the trailer for some things, like smoking the brisket. The brisket taco is incredible. Although I think it was originally a drive-in, there’s space inside to eat as well, just not a lot. I’m not from Bridgeport and don’t know the history of this spot; being so far west of Sox Park, I had no reason to pass it very often

  1. Great photo. From my old home position the baseball team was always between the Cubs, White Socks and the Cardinals. Location change now it is Kansas City and they are really bad.

  2. … we are both White Sox fans. Although my husband is also (gasp) a Cubs fan.

Do you make him sleep on the couch half the time during the baseball season, Cate? (And call him half-a-“yuppie scum” during interleague play?) 🙂

    1. Late to this cause I was out of town and didn’t realize Jerry had posted this! But no, I’ve gotten to used to the Cub thing. I just don’t like him to wear the Cubs stuff when we’re together.

  3. As a long time Chicago-phile I must admit I like this conventionally verboten concept of being a White Sox fan *and* a Cubs fan. Finally (at age 58) got to spend some time in Chicago earlier this year, and I was pleased that the Cubs were in town, but I would have gone to the South Side to watch the Sox instead if that had been my only MLB option.

Incidentally the people at Wrigley field were very nice, they picked up on the alien (New Zealand) accents of my wife and I and showered us with free merch and a photo on the hallowed turf after the game. I can’t remember whether merch is on Jerry’s disapproved words list, if so sorry, but I like it :- )

  4. “The brisket taco is incredible.”

For some reason the thought of this has never occurred to me, nor have I seen it anywhere. Yet it sounds like genius. Smoked Brisket Taco – of course! Now I will have to find one.

  5. The 2008 Olympics saw not only Michael Phelps winning eight gold medals in a single Games, it also showcased probably the greatest performance in the history of track racing when Usain Bolt won golds and set world records in both the 100M and 200M events. They were the most dominating, powerful races I’ve ever seen.

  6. I was out of town and didn’t realize Jerry had posted this! Just wanted to say, yes, all WEIT readers should go to Antique Taco–get the brisket taco, and also the carnitas are to die for. But they’re all good. Also the elotes side dish is the best anywhere. And rather marvelous cocktails, surprisingly. Best if you can go in outdoor weather, but winter is long, and there is space inside too.
