Here’s an almost real-time view of Hurricane Dorian (just an hour from before I posted this) from the International Space Station. The storm, now a Category 5, is battering the hell out of the Bahamas. It looks peaceful from up there, but on the ground the winds are fierce. Here’s part of the YouTube summary of the NASA video:
Cameras outside the International Space Station captured views September 1 of Hurricane Dorian from 260 miles in altitude at 12:16 p.m. Eastern time as it churned over the Atlantic Ocean over the northern Bahamas. The storm, which is moving in a westerly direction with sustained winds of 180 miles an hour, is a dangerous Category 5 hurricane, carrying the strongest winds in recorded history for the northwestern Bahamas.

For a radar view of Dorian (from my lab) see this link . Hit current time in upper left hand corner when you first get on page…it will auto update after that…
That’s a nice look. Appears the eye is going right over the grand bahama. I experience one like that in Okinawa once. The eye sat on top of us most of the day.
What is it like in the eye? Calm, right? But with 185 mph winds nearby.
The experience we had in this one was almost hard to believe. During most of the night the wind blew, around 100 mph on this one. Then in the morning sometime, the wind just stopped. I think the sun even came out at some point but it was like that for several hours. Then before dark it started back up with the 100 winds in the other direction.
This typhoon just sat over the Island and it was very strange. I think the name of this one was Typhoon Kirk but they often did not give Typhoons names.
You can look up some stuff on this Typhoon I experienced. 1996 was the year.

Thanks. They are beautiful from space even as they wreak havoc at the surface.
Thanks for the link…got caught there for a while. Lots of neat information (that I don’t really understand).
Mmmm. What happen to the first post you put up before this one? I made a comment and zip, it was gone.
Dorian must’ve blown it away.
I just watched that supposedly live stream and I’m pretty sure it’s just on a loop. Check the white piece of debris and then the yellow one.
My house in Vero Beach is still in the cone. I’ve never run away from a hurricane in the past. With tail between my legs, this post is from Skyway Bridge fishing pier near St. Petersburg, Fl. Not a fisherman but the Birding is spectacular.

What birds do you see there?
Terns (4 species), gulls (3 species), maybe Magnificent Frigatebird (very distant), Ruddy Turnstones, Brown Pelicans, Osprey, Double-Crested Cormorants, Fish Crow, ….and more. Skyway Bridge as back drop. Rather beautiful.
Global temperature rise is probably making this one stronger. Let’s see if the Republican party can explain away this hurricane season like they did the last one. As soon as the last Republican congressperson has sold off their seashore properties, they’ll suddenly declare an emergency.
My cynicism towards Republicans runs deeper. I see them screaming “emergency” while their seashore properties are in danger. Once they sell them off, they’ll no longer give a shit what happens on the coast.
Why do you think Trump cancelled the trip to Poland? Out of concern for people? No– probably because he was afraid the hurricane might damage one of his FL properties. Yes, I’m cynical–based on reality.

Ooooh, maybe that nasty ol’ hurricane is heading straight for Mar-a-Lago…..of course if Mar-a-Lago is damaged Frump will find a way for the government and taxpayers to pay for repairs.
To quote Li’l Red Riding Hood (and Sam the Sham), What a great big eye you have.
South of Daytona Beach. Just put up the shutters, and load tested the generator. Now it’s just the annoying wait. Seven miles per hour is sloooow.
