Good morning! Welcome to the end of the week, I hope the weather is better where you are than here in Ireland where the the skies are black with rain, alas.
Today’s birthday candidates hail from all over the world.
1914 – Hedy Lamarr, Austrian-American actress and inventor of a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology (d. 2000)
1918 – Spiro Agnew, 39th Vice President of the United States (d. 1996)

1950 – Parekura Horomia, New Zealand politician, 40th Minister of Māori Affairs (d. 2013)
Here’s a strange note from On-This-Day history, the first one managing to be Islamophobic and antisemitic at the same time.
694 – At the Seventeenth Council of Toledo, Egica, a king of the Visigoths of Hispania, accuses Jews of aiding Muslims, sentencing all Jews to slavery.
1620 – Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower sight land at Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
1861 – The first documented football match in Canada is played at University College, Toronto.
1872 – The Great Boston Fire of 1872.
1965 – A Catholic Worker Movement member, Roger Allen LaPorte, protesting against the Vietnam War, sets himself on fire in front of the United Nations building.
1967 – Apollo program: NASA launches the unmanned Apollo 4 test spacecraft atop the first Saturn V rocket from Cape Kennedy, Florida.
1985 – Garry Kasparov, 22, of the Soviet Union becomes the youngest World Chess Champion by beating fellow Soviet Anatoly Karpov.
2016 – Donald Trump is declared the winner of the US Presidential Election
Hili appears to be very enthusiastic about all the work ahead. Perhaps it is because the work is not ahead of her.
Hili: I’m looking at the schedule of tasks.A: And?Hili: There is plenty to do.
Hili: Czuwam nad kalendarzem robót.
Ja: I co?
Hili: Jest wiele do zrobienia.

Since I’m pissing everyone off, let me reiterate that Led Zeppelin sucks, and that the Moody Blues even when they went all adult contemporary were and are a better band and one of the all-time greatest bands ever, and you can make bank on that, missy

A thread on an old Peanuts strip
This strip is reprinted in "You've Done It Again, Charlie Brown," (Fawcett Books, 1970). It has blown my mind. I don't believe that I'd ever seen it before, it feels different from a Schulz strip, and peers at the deeper Peanuts Universe around a corner. May I ramble? Thank you. pic.twitter.com/jW3dtb8fyk

For “Blazing Saddles” fans: “That’s Hedley!!”
In south east England we need the rain! A dry autumn… 🙁
Hedy Lamarr – according to one book she was supposedly forced to ‘sleep’ with the two most infamous fascists by her husband to facilitate arms deal…
The osprey pictures are amazing.
Yes. The osprey is a bird I have been watching locally. They are spectacular fish catchers, probably only second to eagles. I hope to be able to film them once I have a nice blind set up on the my river front. Here’s a fine short film segment from BBC:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQOVcP67zFM
That is incredible. The wings from 23 to 29 seconds in are so beautiful. It reminds me of the butterfly stroke in swimming which I can’t really properly do. It looks like a similar motion. Thanks for sharing.
Spectacular
BTW, I attended a presentation of a golden Eagle by people who rehabilitate, train for hunting, and release young eagles. The eagle they brought to the demo was a 15 year old female who you have probably seen in some nature documentaries. She is filmed hunting for programs like Nature, National Geographic, etc.
For all you Spiro Agnew (non)fans out there, Rachel Maddow is doing a series of weekly podcasts about ol’ Ted, aptly entitled “Bag Man.” Goes to show for any youngsters, we’ve lived through interesting political times before.
And speaking of the lovely and talented Ms. Hedy Lamarr, there was a damn fine documentary about her came out last year, Bombshell.
Yes, “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story” is a good show. Here’s a trailer: https://youtu.be/BKXAkITImGU
Could Hedy Lamarr be any more beautiful?!
The Moody Blues and Led Zeppelin don’t belong in the same comparison. It’s like comparing apples and cats.
But both are eucaryotes!
Yes, the documentary on her was very good.
Lamarr was inducted into the US Patent Office’s National Inventors Hall of Fame, along with her co-inventor George Antheil. She and Antheil also received the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award.
Fishing ospreys may be badasses but don’t watch them eat. We had one routinely devour his fish on top of a telephone pole in the corner of our backyard. The fish is still flapping its tail while the bird is taking chunks out of it at a leisurely pace. Yuck.
Badassedness aside, I’ve always been a bit disappointed in them. Scary, strong badass birds that sound like Tweety Bird. You expect a loud sharp, hits you in the solar plexus “RRRAAAWWWWK”. But what you get is; “peep”.
It’s like Mike Tyson – one of the best fighters the world has ever seen and he sounds like Elmer Fudd.
Catman dates from 1940, so he precedes Angry Catman—maybe they can share superheroic tasks? Catman will go after routine criminals, while Angry Catman will avenge himself on the enemies of science. For his sidekick he could get a duck on a leash.
“Catman” twas a supervillain originally appearing in Batman comics as a male counterpart to CatWoman.
But for me, the original phrase referent will be the “Cat People” of Val Lewton’s classic horror film of the 1940s.

The band that wrote and recorded Whole Lotta Love cannot possibly suck.
+1
Yes. In my opinion, pretty much every subsequent “heavy metal” band is an attempt to imitate LZ. And not nearly as good.
Who else could do: Whole Lotta Love, Thank You, Over the Hills and Far Away, Rock and Roll, Down by the Seasise, In My Time of Dying, Bron Y Aur, etc.
Those boys had a range. They could play.
