Monday: Hili dialogue

Thus endeth the weekend, alas. Welcome to Monday. It’s Global Handwashing Day, so, you know, encourage your friends and colleagues to act like members of an advanced society and not like animals.

In birthdays we have Virgil, Roman poet (70 BC – 19 BC);  James Tissot, French painter and illustrator 1836 – 1902);  P. G. Wodehouse, English novelist and playwright (1881 – 1975) and the man who gave us Jeeves and Wooster; and in 1953 Tito Jackson, American singer-songwriter and guitarist, and member of The Jackson 5.

 

Today in history in 1878 The Edison Electric Light Company began operation. In 1888 the “From Hell” letter allegedly sent by Jack the Ripper was received by investigators. It was regarded at the time as possibly authentic among hundreds of hoax letters received at the time. However there is no consensus as to whether it was the real thing and as the ‘Ripper’ was never caught it is destined to remain a mystery.

In 1966 the Black Panther Party was created by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. In 1990 Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to lessen Cold War tensions. In 1997 the Cassini probe launched from Cape Canaveral on its way to Saturn.

Hili is concerned about keeping up appearances today.

Hili: This window must be washed.
A: It’s not so very dirty yet.
Hili: But in this picture I look like a crying cat.

  1. That mimosa is common in Rarotonga, where it is known as ‘sensitive grass’ (I don’t know its native name). I have to admit I can never resist brushing it to watch it fold up.

    But it does have small prickles on the stems, so if you walk on it in bare feet, you know about it.

    1. We have a similar plant, Mimosa quadrivalvus, here in Missouri, which we also call the sensitive plant and does the same thing. It also goes by the name sensitive briar, catclaw sensitive briar, and because it’s the Bible Belt, some call it devil’s shoelaces. Used to see it all the time when I was a kid but haven’t found it for years. We also have the mimosa tree, Albizia julibrissin, a beautiful but highly invasive Asian tree, but it doesn’t have sensitive leaves, and they say it spreads and grows it’s quite an insensitive bastard.

      More seriously, it is a trait that you can at least imagine to see in many animals. Dunno how to observe it though – is it connected to ticklishness?

  3. I’ve seen other videos of jaguars taking down caymans, but none with such a close view of their heads and the biting action of the jaguar. For some reason, I’m fascinated watching jaguars taking down caymans in the water. I can’t bear most other hunting and stalking videos.

  4. Is the female centipede “gardening” her eggs, or did that tweeter mean “guarding”? For all I know, “gardening” might be a specialized term used specifically when describing centipedes caring for their eggs.

  5. I had one of those Mimosas. Very “touchy” about its environment, so I remember that as one of those that did not respond to my green fingers much.
