Male lion roars, cubs try to imitate him

October 2, 2018 • 2:00 pm

A friend posted this on Facebook, and I found a YouTube video showing the same scene. Here a roaring male lion (listen how he makes his calls resonate!) is imitated by his cubs. (Matthew asked, “But what is the male trying to say?” My answer is “These are MY cubs!”) The cubs can’t even come close to Dad’s sound, but their attempts are adorable.

The YouTube notes:

A male lion and his cubs makin’ some noise! This was filmed near Jao in the Okavango river delta in Botswana.

  1. The female is good. Just lay down and let John have his little lesson in noise.

  2. I was once at the San Francisco zoo during lion feeding time. The lions would come into an indoor section of their paddocks. Some of them began roaring (in anticipation of feeding?) It was unbelievably powerful, our chests and bodies vibrating.

    1. I once lived near the Seattle Zoo. You’re not kidding; you can feel their roars, especially the males.

  3. So cute! I’ve had three strays outside my house these past few months. Well, they started as two, but they had a kitten a little over a month ago. The other day the mama cat came marching back to the deck with a chipmunk in her mouth. She let it go in front of the kitten, still alive, and watched her kitten chase is around trying to kill it. It was the cutest thing. The kitten kept catching it, picking it up in its mouth, accidentally dropping it, and chasing it around and around in circles. He eventually lost it. It was also fascinating to see the parents’ complete disinterest in whether or not the critter get away because their baby had to learn how to kill. I had Yakety Sax playing in my head the entire time.

      1. After nearly 30 years of cat ownership, I’ve long been anesthetized to the pain of chipmunks at the claws and teeth of cats.

  4. I was parked in a Hotel Car Park for a Function, which unbeknown to me was bordered on one side by the rear Fence of the Lion Enclosure of the City Zoo, came out to get the Car in the early hours when I was greeeted by that sound in the Video, which btw doesn’t do it justice, it cured my costipation I can tell you.
