Monday: Hili dialogue

Good morning!

It’s the birthday of British actor Colin Firth (1960), designer Karl Lagerfeld (1933), Aerosmith lead guitarist Joe Perry (1950) and American journalist & blowhard Bill O’Reilly (1949).

Because of the Aerosmith connection we can listen to this track today, which famously features bandmate Steve Tyler’s daughter Liv and actress Alicia Silverstone in the video. I always find it a little bit weird: getting your kids to sex up your videos is the stuff Greek Tragedies are made of.

Today in history, in 1960 during the Summer Olympics in Rome, Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia became the first sub-Saharan African to win a gold medal, winning the marathon in bare feet. He was tragically badly injured in a car accident in 1969 that left him a paraplegic.

In 1967 the people of Gibraltar voted to remain a British dependency rather than becoming part of Spain. In 1974  Guinea-Bissau gained independence from Portugal. A gristly bit of history: in 1977 Hamida Djandoubi, who had been convicted of torture and murder, was the last person to be executed by guillotine in France. In 2001 Charles Ingram won the TV game show Who wants to be a Millionaire? by cheating. Although he claimed innocence he was in court only two years later on a fraud offence. In 2008 the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, described as the biggest scientific experiment in history, was powered up in Geneva, Switzerland; but initial testing was delayed for 14 months until 20 November 2009, following a magnet quench incident that caused extensive damage to over 50 superconducting magnets, their mountings, and the vacuum pipe.

In 2017 Hurricane Irma wreaked havoc throughout Florida and then later in the Caribbean.

So much for history, onto general weirdness of the Internet.

    Especially a bathroom where some of the patrons may already be in a slightly unsteady state…

  4. What’s more cringe-inducing… Steve Tyler sexing up his 17 yr old daughter in a music vid or Donald Trump claiming he would date his daughter on TV?

    Answer: both, kinda…

    1. Both are creepy. I never liked Tyler or Aerosmith. Now, I like them even less. I’m no prude, but that video made me throw up a little.

        1. Not really a penance – Tyler has a suitable-for-radio-airplay version that differs markedly from the point of the real lyrics which he only rolls out live. The guy is all about the money although he already has more than he could possibly spend – no artistic integrity [like Jagger/Richards]. Aerosmith, an entirely plastic rock’n’roll band – as pointless as Bon Jovi.

          Liv Rundgren Tyler seems from afar to be fairly well balanced with minimal wacky beliefs [TM for the disadvantaged might be one] & her desires lean towards stability – 180 degrees from her mum & biological dad. The resilience of the young.

    2. Tyler was once a judge for American Idol. One particular audition by a young girl, you could see he appreciated the talent, as all could, but it was just as well there were others in the room, it was bordering on indecent.
      Bill Wyman (ex bass guitarist with the Stones)is another rock and roller who didn’t know where the boundaries were.

        Rally videos, air crash documentaries, ‘fail’ videos, slow-motion videos, marble machines and dominos, steam locomotives, airliner design videos… I refuse to look at cutesy-animal videos or I’d never surface again.

  7. Linkedin has information. Those ‘fake’ or ’embellished’ profiles are easy to read into. Education usually tells one almost everything about someone, not a stunning career as Executive Vice President of Marketing, Engineering Branch, blah blah blah.
