Good morning, and welcome to the weekend, may there be pots of coffee and tea in your future.

It’s the birthday of Avicii and Pink so we get to have music videos in their honor.

It is also the birthday of US politician Bernie Sanders (1941), Swedish race car driver Stefan Johansson, (1956) and country singer Patsy Cline (1932 – 1963) who died at the tragically young age of 30 in a plane crash.

In history today, in 1974 US President Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon for any crimes Nixon may have committed while in office. In 1966 Star Trek premiered with its first-aired episode, “The Man Trap” which you can watch here if you are so inclined. It isn’t the first episode filmed, the original pilot The Cage was not initially broadcast and was re-edited to fit into a later episode The Menagerie. In 1975 US Air Force Tech Sergeant Leonard Matlovich, a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, appeared in his Air Force uniform on the cover of Time magazine with the headline “I Am A Homosexual”. He was given a general discharge, later upgraded to honorable. In 1930 3M began marketing Scotch transparent tape. In 1944 during World War II: London was hit by a V-2 rocket for the first time.

Over in Poland Hili is occupied with Deep Thoughts again.

Hili: I’m counting the Seven Deadly Sins.
A: So how many are there?
Hili: Six.

In Polish:

Hili: Liczę siedem grzechów głównych.
Ja: I ile ci wychodzi?
Hili: Sześć.

Onto today’s Twitter offering.

Jerry insisted on this one being included.

A motivational message from SMBC

You’ve never seen an apple like this before

I have no idea

This kind of looks like the Before and After pics on the perils of not keeping up with your shaving regime.

How this guy found himself in this position we’ll never know, but it was worth it.

Fair play to the kid, he doesn’t drop the cup.

The cat portion of the post

For those of you who have not had a cat & dog pairing in the home before, I assure you this is just play. Dogs are very careful not to hurt their cat companions, the cats are less concerned about the rules and do occasionally draw blood.

      1. Just wait til you get to “majuscules”

… “majusculature” would be the …noun of some sort?… if there was one…

  1. Re. the pictogram, it’s obviously warning people against high-fiving spaghetti trees if they’re located near train tracks, which is pretty sensible if you ask me.

    1. I see the pictogram:
When leaving the Baishun yado do NOT throw your javaline until your on the stairs.

        1. Yes, I saw that in the Youtube comments.

There are several videos of that insane path before it was reconstructed (or rather, replaced by a new one on the same alignment).
The sheer drops and crumbling concrete with gaping holes in it are terrifying. If I had taken a video there (like, supposing I had ever been there, which I never would have) it would just consist of ten minutes huddled in a corner hard up against the rock, sobbing uncontrollably and unable to move…

      1. That Royal Path has indeed some prostate cramping parts (sorry, Ladies, I’m not 100% sure about what cramps inside you). It looks derelict and therefore dangerous. One obviously asks, what about those who actually built it? I should think it is not a regular part of the path to Compostela, is it?

  2. Camino de Santiago: Spanish pilgrimage.
The pictogram probably says “I hope you feckin fall off the rope bridge – you $5/day non-tipping backpackers buy one coffee in my cafe for three hours while using the fecking internet to update your fecking precious instagram & have the cheek to wash & brush up in the wash room – then you walk off with the soap & the toilet roll. Feckers!”
Another sign n the route – there are many of these:
    https://flic.kr/p/M7QXkV
    feckers!

  3. “Warning: crazy action scenes sometimes occur in this area. This one time a guy totally was hanging from a rotating thing and shooting his gun at the bad guys and it was all like POW BAM KABLOOEY”

  4. Plaid-shirt guy was eventually removed and replaced at the Trump rally in Billings, MT.

Also at that rally, in the crowd behind Trump, we had this girl wiping her nose with the American flag:

Now, the girl pretty clearly did it absentmindedly, and I don’t read anything into it. But imagine, if this had been an Obama appearance and some black kid standing behind him had done the same, what the Tucker Carlsons and Laura Ingrahams and others on Fox News would be making of the clip.

  5. I believe i saw a longer version of the video in which plaid shirt guy was soon removed by officials and replaced with a young lady whose facial expressions were more positive toward the leaders words.

        1. “played” was my pronunciation until Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (1982) with Steve Martin & Alan Ladd – Mr. Ladd [d. 1964] incorporated, so to speak, from archive footage.

  6. #plaidshirtguy was interviewed by Don Lemon on CNN last night. He was never a Trump supporter and took the position deliberately, along with a couple of friends. He said they make people promise to cheer and wear MAGA hats. They didn’t fulfill the bargain so they were ushered out.

  7. Technically, “The Man Trap” was shown 2 days earlier on Canadian TV, but everyone observes Sept. 8th as the kick-off date of Star Trek.

I recall reading somewhere that it was actually the 5th episode filmed.

  8. I’m guessing that Hili only counts 6 deadly sins because she wouldn’t count gluttony as a sin.

  9. We always had a cat & dog pairing when I was growing up. They did their share of rough stuff, but once the pecking order had been established it was just fine. Cat’s do seem to have a psychological aspect to their game. While a dog just reacts with little apparent awareness, cats often play the confident, superior, in control, master of the situation. Perhaps they think that will convince the dog that aggression will be a waste of time.

    1. Moved to a house on five acres once. Our lead cat was unafraid of the numerous roaming dogs, once walking through a pack of four of them- who had come onto our property- one of them a Great Dane.

They just stood there barking stupidly, but had no idea what else to do, as he strolled through them with complete indifference.

      1. If he’s shown fear or started to run, they would have taken that as a sign to attack. Smart cat.

    2. We had a Sheltie when I was a teen and she liked to play with my cat. They were fast friends. Their favorite game was rather bizarre. It involved the dog grabbing the cat around the back of the neck and dragging him around. Never hurting him, never against his will, and he had a permanent matted scruff from the drool and dragging. It was really odd and most everyone freaked when they first saw it, as they thought the dog was killing the cat. They were quite a pair.

  10. The apple was amazing!

On the last video, I believe I have seen it titled “every day…”.

  11. The Avicii video is a John Galt type fantasy for beautiful people; a dream that superior people are hated by the masses and must retire to a safe sanctuary where only their kind live.
