Vote for cats!

August 13, 2018 • 7:38 pm

Brady Haran, who, among other things makes YouTube videos about science, is taking a vote on who favors dogs vs. who favors cats.

You know what to do: click on the tweet below to go to Haran’s twitter site, and then vote for felids! I don’t ask readers for much, and never for money, so humor me and vote the right way by clicking on the tweet below. There are only a few thousand votes, d*gs are winning, the vote ends at about 4 pm Chicago time on Tuesday, and we have 56,000 subscribers. Do the old Professor a favor.

We can do it!

    1. That’s my situation too. Not on it, don’t plan on getting on it. The felines will have to fend for themselves on this one (which they are much much better to do compared to d*gs)

    1. You’ll perhaps be relieved to know that Deets, Hitch, and I were not allowed to vote because we aren’t signed up on Twitter. That’s because we think Twitter is one of the worst things ever invented.

  1. Sorry, but I refuse to have anything to do with Twitter, Facebook or other “social media” platforms.

    1. Hi, Joe…I just posted and then saw that you’d posted just before me. If you’re still reading this post, you’ll see my post below yours.

Yeah, I don’t care for social media. I’m only on Facebook (if I can even be said to be “on”) because that’s the only way I can be in contact with certain people.

But when Jerry’s request came rolling in, I did use Twitter for the very first time.

      1. I signed up for Farcebook because I needed to contact an ex-tenant of mine and the only lead Google gave was her Farcebook account. And the only way I could get a message to her was to sign up. Screw you, Farcebook!

I responded to half-a-dozen ‘friend’ requests, but never again, I now get bombarded with auto-emails every time one of my ‘friends’ posts anything. I can’t figure out how to stop it without ‘unfriending’ them which I don’t want to do as it seems like being hostile. I get numerous more ‘friend’ request emails which I don’t know if they’re genuine (from the real friends concerned) or have been auto-generated so I just delete them on sight.

        1. I like Facebook. I’ve been a member for a long time and participate in several groups, according to my interests — fishing, photography, birds, technology, physics, and so on.

It’s possible to reach an equilibrium. I’ve blocked or ignored the occasional assholes, and made friends with others whom I’d never have otherwise met. It’s been a net good for me.

As an experiment, not long ago I created a new Facebook account with a splashy (but honest) banner photo and profile. and just watched it from afar, without posting at all. It was bombarded with all manner of crazy weirdos (and I’m sure some were good people). Not an equilibrium state.

          1. I agree. I use facebook in the same way. Of course there is a lot of tripe on FB and other social media but the same is true of blogs, magazines, tv programmes, films etc. You just have to select the stuff you find to be of value and ignore the rest.

  2. Years ago I joined Twitter on the advice of the guy who founded our local atheist club. But I never did anything with it, never used it, never got involved. Have no interest in it.

But since you asked so nicely, I’ve gone to Twitter for the first time and clicked to vote for cats.

      1. Yup. They’re not refusing on principle to vote for kittehs, they’re refusing on principle to sign up for Tw*tter.

  3. Voted for cats, but it still looks bad.

For all those people “virtue signalling” by proclaiming you won’t have anything to do with Twitter, you only have to sign up for Twitter, vote and then never look at Twitter again in your whole life.

    1. It’s not “virtue signalling” – I will not sign to Twitter even for just this exercise, don’t assign a motivation to me please Jeremy.

      1. It’s your prerogative not to sign up for Twitter, but I’m not sure why you feel the need to proclaim it on this thread.

The post, by the way, was a bit tongue in cheek, hence the scare quotes around “virtue signalling”.

        1. Gate keeper & chief decider Jeremy. It came over as a sneer so you might work on that & “scare quotes” [see what I did there?] didn’t get that message across.

Your suggestion [?] that people who don’t want to sign up shouldn’t say so here – that is somehow your business to do while it is not my business to say I will not sign up?

          1. I didn’t say you shouldn’t, I said you didn’t need to.

And if you want sneering, the tone of your original post came across as sneering towards Twitter followers to me.

  4. Tried to vote–for cats, of course–but it wouldn’t accept my vote unless I signed up for Twitter, which I absolutely will not do. No fair!

  5. Sorry, no Twitter for me thanks.

But for the record, the only cats I have ever liked are ones that behave like dogs. The rest are downright demonic.
