Good morning; it’s a Monday, and October 23, 2017. There are internet problems where I’m staying, so I’m hoping this post actually appears.
They are apparently fixed now but this is late. It’s National Boston Cream Pie Day, and if you don’t know what that is, here’s a photo (it’s not really a pie but a cream-filled, chocolate-topped cake):
It’s also Mole Day, honoring not the animal but Avogadro’s Number, the unit of chemical measurement that is 6.02 × 1023 —roughly the number of molecules in a substance in a measure equal in grams to its molecular weight; e.g., the number of hydrogen atoms in 1 gram of hydrogen (atomic number 1) or the number of carbon-12 atoms in 12 grams of carbon). Why today? Because it’s 10/23 (the exponent), and at 6:02 in either the morning or evening, you’ll be right on the button.
On this day in 1707, the British Parliament met for the first time, and in 1850 the first National Women’s Rights Convention opened in in Worcester, Massachusetts, not far from here. On this day in 1917, Lenin called for the October Revolution, which began with an armed Bolshevik uprising in Petrograd (St. Petersburg) on October 25. On this day in 1929, the great New York Stock Market Crash began: the harbinger and beginning of the Great Depression. On October 23, 1973, Richard Nixon agreed to turn over to the special prosecutor the subpoenaed tapes of his conversations in the Oval Office. Remember this?: “We could get a million dollars.” Finally, on this day in 1998, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat reached a “land for peace” agreement. It was just one more failure in the miserable history of peacemaking efforts in the region.
Notables born on this day include Gertrude Ederle (1905), Ned Rorem (1923), Johnny Carson (1925), Ang Lee (1954), Dwight Yoakam (1956), and Randy Pausch (1960). Those who died on October 23 include Zane Grey (1939), Al Jolson (1950), Jessica Savitch (1983; drowned), and Christian cartoonist Jack Chick (last year). Let’s have a video of one of his famous cartoons, which all evolutionists and atheists have seen:
Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is dining well on the local rodents:
Hili: Autumn!A: Do you associate it with time passing?Hili: No, the mice are exceptionally delicious this time of year.
Hili: Jesień!
Ja: Kojarzy ci się z przemijaniem?
Hili: Nie, myszy o tej porze roku są wyjątkowo smaczne.
This tw**t contains a Burger King anti-bullying video, which seems quite effective. When they staged a mock bullying incident, with actors, in a Burger King chain, few people came to help the bullied child. But when a burger was “bullied” by being smashed by the server, everybody complained. I don’t know if it will help stop bullying, but it shows how few people care about it (at least to people) when it happens in public. (h/t: Blue)
Burger King just released one of the best anti-bullying PSAs I've ever seen pic.twitter.com/0RV1JUvBd2

And here’s a tw**t, “Presidential Greeting” from reader Barry:

The mice are delicious this time of year. That is really a great line for any cat. So is the internet problem just local or is N. Korea or Russia working on the east coast?
I am only a third of the way into – The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump but this book will give you the creeps.
Dunkin’ Donuts used to have a Boston Creme Pie donut. They used to have dozens of great varieties, but now only offer an handful.
They still have it: I got one at Midway Airport before I flew to Boston. It’s my favorite after the double chocolate frosted.
I am crestfallen that you failed to include me in your notables born on this day. I feel that since I was born at 6:02AM on this day, Mole Day, I was destined to become a chemistry professor. Making the transition to archery coach from there is inexplicable.
I guess we all suffer from a lack of recognition. I will check back in a year to see if I make the cut then.
Narcissistic comedy. Much better than the not so funny example in Washington DC.
Well, you stayed in education. 🙂
Happy to have missed Jack Chick up till now.
I love Chick – he is (unintentionally) hilarious.
Strange, for some unaccountable reason, I had it fixed in my head that Jack Chick was was an x-rated gay cartoonist. Would that he had been!
You might be thinking of R. Crumb, although he isn’t gay.
The Holy Book of Chick, an account of his activities and mischief, can be downloaded at “his” Wikipedia page.
PCC(E), Jessica Savitch should be 1983.
Will fix, thanks.
What we really need is a Mole Day celebrating the sauce.

I had some last night; photos to come later today.
Thanks for the trigger warning. I will avoid the site for the rest of the day.
Actually, too late. Off for an early lunch at a local taqueria.
I’m tempted to make a Boston Cream Pie with mole poblano in lieu of chocolate frosting.
What’s the atomic mass of mole sauce so we can have a mole of mole? (I don’t want a mole of mole of the other kind. The XKCD cartoonist will show you why.)
I would like a day to celebrate the four-legged moles; but this one’s okay, too.
Found some Mole Day jokes here: https://www.thoughtco.com/funny-mole-day-jokes-and-humor-608525.
Learned something new about Worcester. Went to college and lived there a separate time for a couple of years as an adult. Good times.
Can’t decide if the Burger King ad is real or not. They had so many cameras (some zoomed and panned), several of the non-actors seemed like actors, and the female who came to the kid’s rescue is an actor according to her twitter (https://twitter.com/thefawz)
Long before Alex Jones, Jack Chick widely accused Roman Catholics, Freemasons, Muslims, Jews et al of murder and conspiracies.
He was an advocate of King James Bible Only (the only Bible with the name of a gay man on it!), and apparently a recluse with little interaction with the public.
The cartoon’s choice of the word ‘goo’ over ‘microbes’ or ‘protoplasm’ is revealing.
And BTW, Mr. Chick, nowhere does Genesis say Adam and Eve passed on their sin to their children.
“Big Daddy” was my favourite.
“Big Daddy” gets transparently desperate and wrong in its discussion of the subatomic particle “gluons”. Contrary to Mr. Chick, there is plenty of empirical evidence for gluons. It sometimes seems that when these guys get into physics, that their abysmal logic becomes most evident. (Of course, I may say that since I understand physics much better than biology.)
Happy mole day!
I am scheduled to go to a panel discussion on science policy this evening, which I thought was appropriate.
… … a darling Ms Hili – doppelgänger !

I didn’t know Hili was a working cat.
Isn’t that an oxymoron?
Only one way to deal a Mole ,blow his bloody head off .
Re the cartoon ,well i am convinced that is how it happened .
Re the quote ,And god so loved the world he gave his only son,i once saw it written along a wall on the Cromwell Road in West London .
Went past it one day and someone had added a
Y to the end ,then someone painted the Y out .
As for the cat and the Gymnast ,not going to comment on what attracted the cat.
Arguably today in 1983 was an extremely significant day for the post-9/11 era. It was the day of the Beirut barracks bombing. The perfection of that technique later persuaded al-Qaeda to learn the same methods from Hizballah, funded by the Iranian state.
Reagan decided against a retaliatory strike. It was the current AQ leader al-Zawahiri (if memory serves), recalling the US non-response to the Beirut bombing, who could not imagine that the US would respond after 9/11.
He miscalculated.
Boston Cream Pie is a family tradition. My daughters insist that I make one at every family gathering.
