Why Evolution is True is a blog written by Jerry Coyne, centered on evolution and biology but also dealing with diverse topics like politics, culture, and cats.
I have a confidant in Russia who can guarantee another 200 subscribers for a modest fee. 🙂
First or all, I’d say: be happy, not complacent, and be empirical. It took (not sure) 7 years to reach 50,000. I don’t know exactly when you started your website; google didn’t reveal. But you have enough vim and vigor to reach 100,000. I think it gets easier the more subs you have; it’s not exponential, but popularity creates popularity. I for one plan to follow WEIT for as long as WEIT exists and I’m sure the majority of your subscribers will do the same. I doubt you lose many subscribers based on your consistent tone. And again, based on the empirical method, you’ll reach 100k in less time it took to reach 50k. So don’t get complacent, you have a new and even easier goal to make: 100,000. Keep on keeping on PCC(E)! I’m speaking for myself, but I know a multitude has your back.
Sorry if that sounded like a love letter, but alas, love is involved. You are much loved Jerry.
horrible spelling/grammar errors…sorry

Thank you for these links. It turns out I missed some of the first entries on the wrbsite. I must have picked it up around 2010. So this was a nice excuse to tour the WEIT archives. 🙂
@Anna
Some great memories in there that’s for sure! At times I wonder about some of the old commenters – where are they now? And wish ’em well.
WOWZ. All I can say is thanks. This is like unearthing the first appearance of some famous super-hero. “Hili meets JerrY” #1. Mint condition might be worth something. 😉 1st edition in Polish might even fetch more!
@Mark R Note that is Pia in the pic not Hili. I’ll let you dig out old Hilis on the Polish site!
On this WEIT site your request is a doddle. It must have been during PCC[E]’s first visit to Poland, which was four years ago in September 2013. Here is the first pic on WEIT of Hili meeting her second ‘dad’ at the age of just over a year old [Hili]: https://whyevolutionistrue.wordpress.com/2013/09/05/hili-dialogues/
Yes, the dialogues started with Hili’s predecessor Pia, who was much more liable to be pugnacious and argue with Andrzej. And baby Hili was adorable!
“And then I will be happy / complacent.”
No you won’t. 60,000 looms…
(Hoping this blatant breach of the Roolz will be taken in the spirit it is intended…)

The fascination with these particular “round” numbers stems from a number base assumed to have been based upon our fingers, and in retrospect it’s not the best choice our ancestors could have made.
To me, in this age of computers it would seem more natural to shoot for a number such as 65,536, which will be the sixteenth time the number of subscribers has doubled.
Yes but that gets exponentially (?) more difficult…
131072
262144
and so on…
in two more steps you’re up to a million
1048576 to be exact (if my brain didn’t slip a digit)
Get ready to release the balloons!
Not helium, I hope. It is getting rare.

Here’s a clue from yesterday:

@Mark R Meet Pia the nine year old kitty writing in to WEIT from Poland way back in February 2009. She had another three years in the excellent, loving care of Malgorzata & Andrzej

And the first post I can see is 14th January 2009
