The man is unhinged, and an embarrassment to every citizen of America. This is our elected leader?

What will he say when a journalist is beaten up or even killed by a crazed Trump-worshipper, because he is surely inciting violence, and has from the beginning of his campaign (for instance, when he was asked what would happen if he didn’t get the nomination he said “there would be rioting in the streets”). We in Australia look on incredulously at his antics, and we all thank the gods that we don’t live there.

    1. He’ll say nothing, or he’ll say nothing for a sufficiently long period of time that his supporters will get the message, just like he did after the Portland murders. People like you and I keep making the mistake of wondering where his red line is when in reality he doesn’t have one.

            Next time you use her laptop, try opening a session in “private” or “anonymous” mode (terminology varies between browsers) ; that should avoid such faux pas. Alternatively, get hold of a (decent quality, decent size) USB drive, put “portable” versions of browser, mail client, whatever you want on it, and use that on borrowed computers. That certainly worked well for me on client’s computer systems.

      From the “realDonaldTrump” name, I deduce that someone else who really does have the name “Donald Trump” registered an account called “Donald Trump” before the Bully-in-Chief, and has (so far) resisted efforts to make him release that valuable name.

I find it reassuring to think that history, as it has been done over the last five hundred years or so, will not look kindly on him or his supporters; but that is only reassuring if the world continues to be a place in which there is some kind of relatively honest, objective long-view of history. And right now that kind of historical consensus-building and commitment to cataloging truth feels like it is under threat.

So there’s no obvious parody for Ivanka.

    People always talk about how authoritarian he is, but it is too rarely noted how submissive his body language and speech becomes when he meets a man whom he perceives as being more powerful. I recall how he told an interviewer that he set up that meeting with the Russian diplomat/spies because “I had to — Putin asked me to” — as if it must be obvious to everyone that it wasn’t for him to say no.

    Whatever it is that fills the power vacuum in world politics — in the space the US vacated in January — will be far worse than anything Trump does.

      4. No this is wrong. If you remove Trump from office you get blood in the streets and anarchy. This is because there is no legitimate way to remove him from office. Petty and buffoonish tweeting is not an impeachable offense, and it’s not a sign of dementia either. Personally I think this tells us nothing about Trump that we didn’t already know.

        1. There is a legitimate way. He could be indefinitely hospitalised for mental illness. And the sort of aggression he is apparently displaying behind the scenes, and now on Twitter, is a symptom of some forms of dementia as well.

          1. I have seen delerium masquerading as dementia in patients Trump’s age and older. It reverses quickly, when the stressers causing it can be addressed. Move Trump from his home in NYC, and he instinctively knows to bounce back and forth to Maralago to retain any bit of control over his brain. Put him in a psych ward and he’ll really lose it.

            Incidently my observations regarding delerium have allowed me to help those suffering from it, but I do not expect this has been researched and published in any peer reviewed journal. After all, the cases I initially learned from were geriatric hip fracture patients stuck in a hospital for 4 to 9 days, awaiting insurance approval before they could undergo surgery. Their signs manifest and grew over that period, then receded in half the time, after their surgeries. Surgery isn’t the only stress capable of doing this, though.

  12. What happens when a reporter is hurt or killed? When is it ok for a sitting president to portay violence against any american he disagrees with. Is this not enough to remove him from office? Is this not a blatent threat against our free press. And where are republican leaders on this? Are they so fearful of Trump they cower in fear from this symbolic attack on our very democracy? I am not feeling very patriotic this July, more like fearfull and angry.

      1. Being a Brit Labour supporter I’m hardly a Trump apologist neither do I particularly care for the office of American President.
        However, I suggest that since his campaign began we have seen that the more a character like Mr Trump is vilified the more he will respond in this fashion.
        Also being narcissistic he probably takes more notice of his profile in the media ratings than his political profile.
        After all, in five years time and (hopefully) out of Office, he will still be a media star.

  32. I watched a report on German TV yesterday about the 150 anniversary celebration in Canada. They said that more and more US-Americans consider to move to Canada because of Trump.
    Is this a triumph for Canada but a tragedy for the United States? I do not know.

    1. Actually it’s neither. It’s people bullshiting to get attention. It’s also insulting to Canadians, to blithely assume we would want them.

    2. Honestly, every time the Republican party does well in an election there is a lot of talk from liberal Americans about moving to Canada. But it is just talk – I am not aware of an actual significant movement of Americans to Canada since the Vietnam War draft era. Back then there actually was.

      1. Canada is a whole other country and people who threaten to come here don’t think about the whole immigration process. The same with Canadians who threaten to go to the US. I think our undefended border and similar culture makes us all forget this. Even during Bietnam, Canada initially turned back deserters. Later they changed their minds and didn’t ask. I do personally know people I met professionally who came to Canada under Bush.

        What is happening now is refugees coming to Canada from the US in fear they will be sent back. They have done this at great personal cost during winter, losing fingers and toes. Many Americans haven’t learned of this as the Canadian border is usually of little interest unless its portrayed by some ignorant Non border state politician in the US as the thing under attack by some third world country called “Canada”.

        1. Losing fingers and toes? That is horrible! It is no little thing. I am sorry they felt compelled to do it this way, and I hope they are able to recover on every level as much as is possible.

          1. Here is a link to this story. The two men who suffered severe frost bite, were granted asylum and given refugee status in Canada, thank goodness. It would really suck to go through all that and not get it. The guy that lost a bunch of fingers was, understandably, very depressed about that.

  33. Ugh, Trump is really the living embodiment of everything that is wrong with culture and politics these days.

    On the other hand, the Democrats are about to pick a safe House district to anoint Linda Sarsour to run in and win (that’s a prediction), so it’s clowns to the left and jokers to the right.

      For the record, I don’t see the problem with the joke to begin with. It’s an edit of a wrestling show playing on a rivalry between Trump and CNN. How that could be construed as incitement to violence baffles me.

    2. Even Republicans were tentatively on CNN’s side over this issue and then they go and do something stupid and awful like this.

      Free advice: When Trump’s rolling around in the mud, you point and laugh, not dive in.
