Why Evolution is True is a blog written by Jerry Coyne, centered on evolution and biology but also dealing with diverse topics like politics, culture, and cats.
For those who might care, I think the name “praying mantis” is probably originally applied to the European mantis, Mantis religiosa. It’s now found in US along with another introduced one, the Chinese mantid. But we also have native species here in the U.S. (e.g., Carolina mantis). Based on how common they are, pic probably shows a non-native. (All the species are extremely efficient predators of butterflies, so I’m not sure I’d recommend releasing them. At least don’t rear the non-natives.)
