Bigotry walks among us

Even if you think that some of the tactics of the Black Lives Matter movement aren’t optimal for their goals, remember that there is still a point to it all. Racism is alive and well in the U.S. While overt racism is no longer permissible in polite society, it still can go underground and be used to terrorize others.

Here’s a video filmed by Mia Frias-Russell in Campbellsburg, Indiana on Wednesday. She’s alone and scared, and who wouldn’t be to wake up and find this?

  2. That’s awful! A close family friend once had swastikas carved into his car. The property damage alone is heartbreaking. The message is scary.

  6. You mean sub-optimal tactics such as protesters chanting “pigs in a blanket, fry like bacon” and “dead cops now”? or the threats of “no justice, no peace” followed by riots and arson when they don’t get what they want?

    Meanwhile, a cop in Miami shoots a guy who’s got his hands up in the air, laying on the ground, telling the cop he’s a mental health worker attempting to get his client, a man with autism, to comply, that they are both unarmed, the guy with autism has a toy firetruck, and the cop still shoots. FFS!

    Are we EVER going to escape this circa 1860’s stupidity?

    These days, what black protesters mostly want is not to be in danger of arbitrarily being shot by police. That seems a modest demand. I would even say that a country which does not supply it is already not at peace.

  8. It makes me want to see her hang on in the community and make a difference over time. Show those monstrous locals for what they are. Vanquish the foe by tenacity and courage. But, then, it’s easy to be brave from afar. I hope she called the police.

    I live in the rural white Midwest and I’ve never felt it more racist than it is now. I see confederate flags flying outside of homes – In Iowa? Heard some of the comments. Makes no sense, but there it is.

    1. Ever read Jon Ronson? I think his book THEM was the one where he visited a Neo-Nazi compound somewhere in the western US (is this guy brave? have a death wish? both?!).I think most of us are aware of this kind of crap, but unless and until we are confronted by it in our daily lives, we can kinda forget, being surrounded by more intelligent beings (as I assume those of us who read this don’t routinely fraternize with the openly racist).
      I have obviously seen and heard racist comments, but had never actually seen a hate crime or intimidation like this in person until the Neo-Nazi cretin who murdered three people, two at the Jewish Community Center in Kansas which at the time I frequented, and another a block or two away at a Jewish retirement home. Until then I had never directly confronted actual anti-semitism in my life, only heard about it. and yeah, what do you say? get out of the midwest? and go where? Since that episode and since reading that book, I’ve noticed a lot of InfoWars stickers plastered onto road signs, dumpsters (more appropriate if INSIDE the dumpster) and so forth, which reminds me that this mentality is far more common, but has spent a lot of time behind closed doors (and minds) and hidden. The only solution that I can think of is what my ancestors had done, which is interracial/cross-cultural humping. but, that’s gonna take a while and I’m not sure anyone wants to get it on with those bigots except other bigots…ah well, it’s worth a try.

    1. Maybe I am naturally skeptical of everything. But immediately after thinking, “wow, that is terrible,” my next thoughts were, “probably did this herself – it is a little over the top – in order to get 100K in a gofund me campaign”.

      I know this is terrible to say, but I only watched once and she didn’t seem that sincere…seemed more like an act for donations!

      1. Perception is treacherous. I don’t share your impression of an act. Without any evidence I would apply the principle “innocent until proven guilty” and rather give money to a swindler than to withhold it from a person in real need.

        As I said, trust but verify. It is true that horrific bigotry and racism still exist, and it is also true that there are some people who will exploit those of us who would help those who have been victimised.

          Another comment said it well: “We will never really know if it’s true, but she has reported it and it is public. If you don’t want to give, then don’t give. If so, give something that you’re comfortable giving.”

  12. Racist, Sexist, and Xenophobic behaviors are despicable and a mental disease. My heart goes out to that poor women. There seems to be a rising tide of hatred over taking our nation and the world. In America its flames are constantly being stoked by right-wing Politicians Talk-Show hosts, from which sick twisted haters feel like they are given licence to come out of their borrows and commit atrocities against innocent people.
    What was done to the women in that video was a was a hate crime. I hope they catch person or persons who did it and that they are given lengthy jail sentences and not just a slap on the wrist for vandalism or some other misdemeanor. In addition I truly hope there is a public and internet out cry against this type of behavior. Decent People must stand against Hatred in all its forms. We must find a way to regulate “free speech” so as to holed persons responsible for inciting criminal behavior through “Hate Speech”, criminally accountable.

    1. Call me cynical, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was not done by a white male. My guess is it was more likely done by a female, likely one who is known to this woman (i.e, they’re having a fight and don’t like each other, probably over a man). There’s a good chance that the person who did this is of the same race as the victim. And lastly, it may have been done by the women herself. Your car breaks down, you’re short of cash, so you buy a $3 can of spray paint and go to town. Post the video and have someone set up GoFundMe pages. It wouldn’t be the first time this has happened.

      It’s always best to have a “wait and see” attitude, IMHO.

        1. Something about the whole scene, in retrospect, also makes me think that “trust and verify” is a wise approach.

      2. Hatred knows no race, ethnicity, or religion, it can spring up in any unbalanced mind. However it is abetted and reinforced by Hate Speech from any source, be it Politics,
        Religion, Race, or whatever. Even with out a source other than a persons own mind hatred can fester. Many haters are men or women who have been spurned by a lover or someone they desire, who are mentally unstable and in sick rage begin stalking that person or even killing them.
        Hatred is the product of an unbalanced mind, but that hatred can be inflamed from many different sources.

      4. I’m far from being a gullible person, but I find your guess bizarre. There’s the chance it could prove to be correct but this would not occur to me, right off the bat. And if it did, I’d likely just wonder aloud in private company, not here. That’s just me, of course……

  15. As for Black Lives Matter’s tactics not being optimal, any white person who says that should equally tell white racists and bigots how they should behave, too. And you should also reflect on what has led the activists of Black Lives Matter to adopt their tactics — maybe they’ve already tried what you so thoughtfully and helpfully (and whitefully) suggest and it JUST HASN’T WORKED? Ever think of that?

    I’m white, and I think white people should help BLM by listening to them rather than talking to them. We have so much to learn and not a lot to teach.

        We have a lot to learn. And most of what we have to learn now is that this woman can get help from non believers as easily as she can as believers.

  16. I think that Black Lives Matter can only exacerbate an already bad situation. They look like bullies. When I defended Darren Wilson (the policeman who shot Michael Brown) on a US block, black and liberal white commenters reacted with the strongest insults I have ever received online, and some suggested to the blog host to ban me. To me, this was the behavior of people used to having their way by bullying and surprised to meet any opposition. If I were among them physically, I would be fearing for my safety. This was long before Chris Marquez and Micah Johnson.

    Another comment above said that “what black protesters mostly want is not to be in danger of arbitrarily being shot by police.” From the Michael Brown case, I didn’t get this message. My impression was that the protesters were convinced in their right from the beginning, before the facts were known, and were immune to any facts that would be revealed, particularly facts that would be against Brown. They seemed to think that if a white police officer confronts a black person, the only decent behavior for the former is to run away.

    I also do not think BLM is likely to save any black lives – quite the opposite. Sandra Bland would be alive today if BLM had not indoctrinated her that if you are black and encounter a rogue cop, you must show how brave you are.

  17. This is really horrible. Im very surprised there aren’t more supportive comments – only 27. A lot of the comments are horrible – from purportedly black people and she’s closed her Facebook link. Not only is her property horribly and humiliatingly vandalised but they’ve forced open the fuel cap and probably wrecked the engine with stuff they’ve put in. She lives alone in a rural Indiana town and has no friends.

    1. Hearing her saying that she doesn’t have any friends there, I thought if I would live in that town and hear this, I would go over to her and offer my friendship.

      (I know friendship has to grow naturally, but you’ve got to start somewhere.)

  20. What BLM claims is that police brutality is racially motivated. In other words that there is somewhat systemic racism. This is not true because the data do not support that.

    Ironically, per capita more whites are killed by police than blacks, when we take into account that police 6x more often has encounters with black criminals, as statistics show. 6x more often because there is that proportion of criminals who are black compared to whites.

    The other matter is that personal racism exists and will always with us. Like this example of that lady. But it has nothing with what BLM matters. They fuel racial divides with their false and poisonous rhetoric and now we harvest what they have sown.

        1. Oh geez, the old black-on-black trope. Seriously does Anyone ever think about the statistics they’re dragging out to prove their twisted view of the world? You what else goes on and on? White on white crime. Where is All Lives Matter when white people are killing and robbing white people by the thousands! Criminy, does it ever occur to people to go a level deeper before making conclusions? Could it possibly be that the reason intra-racial crime is so much higher than interracial crime is because we still live in a relatively segregated society with largely white areas and largely black areas and largely Hispanic areas? It’s not like criminals think, “Gee, these people are the same race as I am, I’d better go across the tracks and commit some crime against some other races!” No, they’re hitting the marks that they know, or hurting the people that pissed then off. And that usually means that those people will be of the same race because that’s what’s around.

          The next thing that usually comes out after “black on black” crime is mentioned is that if all the black people were replaced with white people, then crime would go down by some ridiculous percent. You can’t get more bigoted than the assumptions that go into that math. I mean, yeah, if you replaced Harlem with rich White people from Wall Street, then you might be right, but then you aren’t adjusting for class, and the Federal Poverty Limit is the best predictor of crime rate, regardless of race.

          Now, this doesn’t mean that BLM has everything right, you can’t compare the number of police shootings to the general population and say “look, blacks are twice as likely to be killed by cops than whites” because cops don’t interact with the general population, they interact with criminals, and blacks, by population, commit more crimes, but then, blacks, by population are also more likely to be poor and, therefore, more likely to be in a position where crime is a viable strategy for survival, and who cares about the consequences anyways because: poverty. This also tracks with white crime, and there are twice as many, total, whites below the poverty line (and twice as many, total, cop on white shootings).

          So, if you’re looking for systemic racism, how about focusing on the roots of the current financial inequality that hits blacks (and Hispanics) harder than whites by population, but also still hits twice as many white people in total (because Republicans focus on blacks as receiving welfare to make it seem like a black problem while twice as many whites receive welfare so that racists shoot themselves in the foo) .

          Yeah, police shootings suck, and a lot of them are unjustified and infuriating and call for better oversight, but the fact we hear about more shootings involving blacks is because that’s where the media’s attention is, and it’s diverting attention from the roots of the problem and putting a lot of hate on cops in general when most of them aren’t the problem and, by the numbers, police as a whole don’t seem to actually be targeting blacks. And yet, thanks to a bloodthirsty media, and a liberal narrative that struts out bad comparisons to keep that narrative alive, black people who may never encounter an officer in their lives let alone in a manner that could leave them injured or dead, are living in fear. And by disenfranchising the poor whites living with a similar struggle, you create a large voting block for a narcissist and sociopath to take office when they should really all be working together to combat the economic pressures and systems that keep them all in poverty. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I’d almost say that it seems the “powers that be” want the BLM movement focusing their energy on police and solutions that are really not going to solve the underlying problem that makes crime a big problem in black communities, which leads to more interactions with cops and therefore more potential deaths and misunderstandings.

  22. I doubt that this is fake. Indiana is home to hate groups and there could be one person determined to intimidate her even if the town is friendly (which I rather doubt).

    I hadn’t heard the word “nigger” in decades, and then I moved to Indiana.

  23. It’s not just the midwest. I live in Montana and before the 2012 election, I saw a local truck with the bumper sticker reading: “Don’t Renig in 2012”. I tried to find out who owned the truck so that I could make a complaint with the Human Rights Commission here and then just let it go, OF WHICH I AM NOT PROUD. The current political climate has eroded our ability to trust ANYTHING that we read/see/hear, thus the skeptical comments on this site. Has this been true since Watergate and the Pentagon papers? Seems so to me.

  27. Fake, fake, and more fake. She is a victim of her own doing. Mia didn’t like her situation, having to live in a mobile home in Indiana. If you knew Mia personally, you;d know that she is a complete mental case/drama queen, and is prone to doing things like this.
