Tomorrow, May 17, is the release date of the paperback of Faith Versus Fact—one year after the hardback. If you couldn’t afford the hardback, now’s your chance to get the book more cheaply. Buy it at any of the sites on the right sidebar, or as Hitchens used to say, at fine bookstores everywhere.
And, I have two talks coming up, one soon and one in October.
The American Humanist Association is having its annual meeting in Chicago, and it’s their 75th anniversary. I’ll be speaking on Sunday, May 29, at 10:45 a.m. on the nexus of humanism, atheism, and science. A book sale and signing will follow, and if you meow I’ll draw a cat in your book (if you can’t meow, you can hiss). All the details are here. Other speakers include Jared Diamond (2016 Humanist of the Year), Elizabeth Loftus, Medea Benjamin, Nebraska Senator Ernie Chambers, artist John DeLancie, Victoria Gettman, and John Shelby Spong. You can register here. Sadly, I don’t even get to leave town for this one.
Just a reminder that I’ll also be speaking at the Freedom From Religion Foundation‘s Annual Meeting, this year from October 7-9 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Other speakers will include Dan Dennett, Dan Barker, Lawrence Krauss, Susan Jacoby, Laurie Lebo, and Marie Shaub. I always enjoy these meetings because they have gravitas, but also fun. And the FFRF is our Official Website Secular Organization.™ Registration is only $60 for members, and you can sign up here. I believe they’re selling books, but if you already have one, bring it along, though you’ll have to meow or hiss for a cat drawing.
Your readers always welcome your self-aggrandizement.
I expect to be there and have booked a room at the hotel.
I knew you, Krauss, and Jacoby were speaking but this is the first I’ve heard that Dan Dennett will also be there. What a great line-up!
Please say hello to Ernie Chambers when he is in your town. He is the best thing Nebraska has in their very strange bicameral legislation. He is a one of a kind.
Ernie Chambers was honored at the last FFRF convention. He gave a somewhat odd acceptance talk leaving many attendees scratching their heads and muttering.
Sounds about right. Ernie once filed a lawsuit against g*d. Ernie is also getting close to 80 years old now and he was suspect during his best years.
I will also be at the FFRF convention in October and agree that the speaker line up is outstanding. I came away last year grumbling about the program compared with previous ones I attended and especially Ernie Chambers. I admire what Chambers has done in the past, but appeared to be quite unprepared to speak coherently.
I don’t often comment on WEIT, but I wonder if WEIT readers could arrange a gathering for drinks or noms or both during the convention. Friday night is “dinner on your own” and it might be fun to get a group together with Professor Ceiling Cat (E).
Count me in!
GBJames send your email to me at ksynergy@msn.com and I will keep track of others who may reply and keep you informed about progress. I would like to contact PPC(e) to explore his interest and availability, but I don’t seem to have his email. Thought I did, but that would have been in the dim past and I can no longer find it.
You can find his eddress by either Googling it or clicking on the “Research Interests” link in the right sidebar, above. 🙂
Good news all around. I already have the HB and Kindle versions of FvF!
Self aggrandize (!) away. Read that book and it is fantastic. Will purchase paperback.
Your blog is invaluable and essential reading. Science post are superb and informative even if difficult to digest for the lay person.
Grateful for what you do.
(Has not escaped my notice that great writers such as Jeffrey Tayler are praising your writing)
Norway’s National Day!
The POMO/Crit theory lefties hate Jared Diamond for not blaming everything on mod capitalist west and imply Shelby Spong can’t be a real Christian because he’s Episcopalian. Not enough ideology or anti west feeling to be found in these sites; then many of the same lefties insinuate that humanism itself is a tainted cause. I could be nasty and imply that there are some bus drivers in Pakistan who could acquaint them with a different vision of humanism
Ive got hardback “Why Evolution is True” so thank you muchly for the heads up on “Faith versus fact” in paperback
