Amy: Back to Black

May 6, 2016 • 4:00 pm

I’ve already posted one of Amy’s versions of this song, but this lively rendition, from the Isle of Wight concert, is better; in fact, that gig is one of her best live performances (I haven’t seen the one at Dingle yet). She appears bright eyed and bushy-haired, not drugged out at all—although she’s swilling something that may be Guinness, or Coke with booze in it. I doubt she ever drank any non-alcoholic beverages on stage. My earlier post explains the song.

By the way, I don’t know who her two backup singers/dancers are (they remind me of the Blues Brothers with the suits and fedora), but they’re superb.

So, to rev you up for the weekend:

  1. My goodness. Jerry has posted three things today that I’ve loved. And this is one.

Amy’s thin legs trouble me. Sadly, part of this is because I wish I were as lanky. (I’m within normal weight for my height–not skinny.) We aren’t supposed to admit that as women. So please be kind. But the other reason is the knowledge of the terrible loss of her passing. Several months back I’d watched the documentary film about her–which was fantastic but heart-wrenching. Her tremendous talent got absorbed by the forces of fame in a way that unraveled her. And she had this unparalleled gift, as seen in this video.

Aside from all that, the lyrics and performance are gripping. I agree about the background singers. And, on the side, I’ve been listening to her version of “Will you still love me tomorrow” on repeat.

I love Amy. This Amy (and, tangentially, Amy Schumer, too.)

    1. Then you must be thinking about Amy Schumer’s joke: my arm is like their legs…:)))

  2. I will still love her voice and still love her expression of the struggle humans have.
