It’s Friday at last, and in a week I shall be in Ottawa, about to head for a brief holiday stint in Montreal. All the poutines and smoked meats better hide! On this day in history, Thomas Edison patented the phonograph in 1878, Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique was published in 1963, and in 1985 the BBC’s Eastenders was broadcast for the first time (it’s still on, right?). The births on Februay 19 include Copernicus (1473), Carson McCullers (1917; read her!), Will Provine (1942, died last year), Amy Tan (1952), and Prince Andrew (1960). Deaths on this day included Ernst Mach (1916), Knut Hamsun (1952; the same day Amy Tan was born), and Leo Rosten (1997). Meanwhile in Dobrazyn, Hili is again spouting off about the superiority of cats. I don’t know how Cyrus can stand it!

In Polish:
Hili: Psy kochają kult jednostki, lubią służyć jednemu panu.
Ja: A koty?
Hili: Koty są demokratami, każdy może im służyć.

And something from Facebook (source lost), showing that somebody really loves their cat. It appears to be an elaborate cat shelter/cat door:

The final edition (6th) of Origin of Species was published this day in 1872! My grandfather was born 6 months later… (no connection!)
Eastenders nuthin’. Last time I looked “coronation street” was still on CBC. What’s that been? – fifty years?
I don’t know when it started on CBC, but Corrie started production in 1960, so it’s a bit of a youngster (56 yo). The Sky At Night in contrast ran from 1957 to 2013 (also 56 years) with the same presenter, and continues to this day in it’s monthly slot. And Desert Island discs still does it’s weekly stint too, as it has (mostly) since 1942 (78yo).
Re Cat cottage entrance – do you think Hili would use this instead of knocking on the window to be carried in? Nah, I don’t think so either.
Love the cat shelter. Also Hili’s silly feather-tailed mousie ( with which our floors and beds are littered).
That is the uber cat door for all time.
I got the picture of the cat shelter/door from a company that provides plans for it and other such things. I can’t remember it’s name. I just checked my Facebook page and I can’t find it, so I must have just “Liked” it on a friend’s page. I can guess which friends it might have been, so I’ll check their pages later and let you know if I find anything.
I love the cat home / possible door. I have two cats and things like this really are grand. I love the many ways one can make our human homes more happy for our non human friends. Thanks. Hugs
Reblogged this on Scotties Toy Box and commented:
I re-blog this gratefully because of the picture of the cat home / door way. I so hope that when Ron gets done rebuilding the home we live in, he will turn his hand to these types of things. He has the skills and tools. Hugs
Three Canadian sweets to try in Ottawa – Beavertails or Queues de Castor (a fried dough pastry made to resemble a beaver tail) at the Byward Market on George Street, Nanaimo bars (more of a British Columbia thing), and Butter Tarts available just about anywhere. In Montreal, look for split pea soup and Tourtière (a meat pastry filled with ground pork, beef, veal or game. I think you already know to seek out Montreal Bagels. If you want smoked meat at Schwartz’s get there early – there will be a line-up. If you still have room and care for a bit of cheese, try the Oka. For a sweet, try the sugar pie or tarte au sucre. C’est du moins mon opinion!
For those with access to Ottawa, you can buy tickets to the Friday evening talk on Faith vs Fact here: http://centreforinquiry.ca/see-jerry-coyne-in-ottawa-in-february/
There is also still some space available for the small group brunch on Saturday, featuring a discussion on free will, and catered by the legendary Dave Smith (http://centreforinquiry.ca/free-will-brunch-discussion-with-jerry-coyne/)
Hili, I think the term you’re looking for is “benign dictators,” not Democrats.
I’ve been using the “check gravity” line for years. Covers a multitude of sins.
Ha ha, I hadn’t thought of that!
My husband, Mr. Bull-in-a-China-Shop, could use it more, though. 😀
