Friday: Hili Dialogue

February 12, 2016 • 6:00 am

Good morning and Happy Friday to all! Grania here again. Professor Ceiling Cat is wending his way to London for his talk later this afternoon, so I am on Hili Dialogue duty this morning. He will of course check in with us later.

It is Darwin Day today (of course) so perhaps we should start with this quote from his On the Origin of Species:

“There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.”

Over in Poland today, Hili is still on her eternal vigilant watch for the turning of the seasons.

A: Where are you going?
Hili: On the roof to see whether Spring is visible yet.

In Polish:

Ja: A ty gdzie się wybierasz?
Hili: Na dach, zobaczyć, czy widać już wiosnę.

And as a little lagniappe, Taskin sent us in a lovely photo of a “catnip infused” Gus. Some of us certainly know how to enjoy life!

  1. Happy Darwin Day everybody, and best wishes to PCC for his talk; I’m sorry I haven’t been able to get to it, but I’m sure there will be reports.

Some slightly worrying news: the Guardian is reporting that Richard has had a mild stroke and has had to postpone his trip to Australia and New Zealand: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/feb/12/richard-dawkins-has-stroke-on-eve-of-australia-and-new-zealand-tour

Get well soon, Richard; the world has need of you for a long time yet.

    1. Not good. But not uncommon. As you say, best wishes for his recovery & continued health. I think he was due to be there tonight.

    2. Now I know why tw*tter lost its sparkle over the past few days. I thought he might be ‘gatvol’ of all the stupid tw*tter comments he gets.

Yes, the world does have need of him – lets hope he recovers completely.

      1. It’s a depressing thought, but I bet it won’t be long before the god squad start gloating.

        Get well soon Richard.

    3. I saw the same story and forwarded it, with my best wishes for Prof Dawkins, to Prof CC(E), to be informed that the family didn’t want unnecessary publicity.

  2. Feb. 12, 1809, was a special day that was not known for several years to come, for the U.K. the United States and the rest of the world.

  3. Love Gus in the tummy position. Like most cats though, he probably bites if you touch or pet his tummy.

    1. Gus is not crazy about tummy rubs, but you can usually get in a second or two if you’re quick! He is a total nip head though.

    2. My daughter & I each have one cat that likes tummy rubs, and another that doesn’t.

I just realized that the likers are both female, and the dislikers are both male. Anybody have more data to add?

      1. Possibly it would be as accurate to say that both of the tummy-rub lovers are mammals? Most mammals like having their nipples rubbed, some more than others.
