Monday: Hili dialogue

November 16, 2015 • 4:50 am

Well, another work weeks begins—another week closer to our demise, and rain is predicted in Chicago through Wednesday. On this day in 1940, the Germans sealed off the Warsaw Ghetto, presaging the tragedy to come. And, on November 16, 1960, Clark Gable died at the age of 59. On the up side, I’ve recovered from my seafood poisoning. Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili and Cyrus play ambulatory philosophers.

Peripatetikós

Hili: Have you read The Book of Job?
Cyrus: No.
Hili: Neither have I.

Hili: Czytałeś “Księgę Hioba”?
Cyrus: Nie.
Hili: Ja też nie.

  1. Hili is wise not to bother with Hioba!
Oh dear! PCC(E) & Hili quoting Job reminds me of this CH Sisson poem –
“I did not have what I wanted when I wanted it
And now what I want is to want nothing more,
A form of death, but not a super-abundance.
Hola there servants, bring me a pot of nothing.
Extinction is in the cup, & I will drain it.”

  2. Yes, this is going to be a crummy two or three days of weather. And just before it gets cold.

    Keep on walking.

  3. Hili might be feeling Cyrus out. She wants to be sure where he stands before declaring she’s an atheist.

  4. Even if one takes the Bible as a serious and at least reasonably accurate description of real history…Job has got to be more than enough to demonstrate that YHWH is mercurial, evil, and not at all to be trusted. Maybe Satan is also an adversary, but YHWH is most emphatically an adversary.

    1. The story of Job was another one that really confused me as a child. As far as I was concerned, it didn’t show what the Sunday School teacher said it did, and it put God’s character in a pretty bad light. I thought they would have been better off not mentioning such an episode.

      1. Same here. My grandfather would relate the story of Job as an example of … something?? I remember having the distinct impression that God was a real jerk.

  5. Rain is predicted though Friday here in Seattle. It’s 39 degrees, and I’m getting on on my bike, all geared up and water-proofed, and headed to a morning of people talking about the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials. I’ll have coffee (Starbucks) :–)
