Jerry walks Leon

It’s taken me a long time to post this on YouTube, but I reported earlier (with photographs) on how I was allowed to take Leon the Hiking Cat for a walk on his leash. We went to a forest preserve outside of Włocławek, where Leon lives with his staff of Elzbieta (she’s at the beginning of the video) and Andrzej, and I took the moggie for a 30-minute stroll. Here’s a clip of part of it, filmed by Andrzej. Malgorzata and the other Andrzej, whom I visit in Dobrzyn, are also in the clip. A good time was had by all!

Notice how carefully Leon sticks to the path, and how he continually looks back to check if the humans are there.

By the way, is anybody old enough to remember Norma Tenega’s song, “Walking my cat named dog”?

  1. I did a double-take on reading the title and had a flash-back to an album (well, a tape when I got to it) of Jennifer Warnes singing ‘Laughing’ Leonard Cohen songs known in my (minuscule) circle of music as “Jenny sings Lenny”

  2. Yes — walking with a cat is much different from walking a d*g.

By now, Baihu is good about staying on the path. But pathways aren’t always as clearly delineated in the desert as in the forest, especially where we have dry washes that, from a cat’s eye level, superficially resemble a path.

I understand that Bengals are especially fond of walks….

  3. How fun is that! I wish my cats would tolerate a harness and leash. They writhe on the floor like I’m trying to kill them!

  4. OK, Jerry… was walking Leon anywhere near as good as you think it might be to get to pet a lion cub? It looked pretty cool…!

  5. what a good kitty!

We had a cat, Fogg, who was 23 inches from neck base to tail base. Very large kitty. He would be on a leash and then crouch low in the grass when he saw children and wiggle his butt.

  6. If I were a cat, I’d tangle myself up in the leash then bite everyone who tried to untangle me. I think I’d make a good cat.

    1. You probably know, but it’s amazing how strong they are when fired up. And fast and sharp.

  7. Hat tip to Andrzej who was likely walking backward (without tripping) while filming this.

  8. Sweet. I’m amazed that Leon has such good path sense. I have never tried to walk a cat. I should try it sometime.

    1. You know those dogs who walk along on a leash looking their owners right in the face the whole time? I’ve never had a dog that does that. My dogs have their noses to the ground smelling every smell they can smell!

  9. I wish my cat would do that. I’ve owned several cats over the years and most of them react to the harness like it is a huge cat-eating spider on their back. Repeated exposure didn’t seem to sensitize them much. One of my cats would just lie down and wait for it to be over.

My current cat will tolerate the harness and leash but is totally erratic when outside. Typically she will run up the first tree we encounter, leaving me awkwardly trying to get her down after she’s looped the leash around a branch. That sort of thing.

Is Leon special, or am I just a dunce in training my cats to go for walks?

  10. I remember that song and I may have not heard it since it first came out. Oldies stations certainly didn’t play it, at least not when I was listening.

  11. I remember that song! I loved it. And I still really like it. No, oldies stations never played it–I looked it up on You Tube.
