Monday: Hili dialogue (and lagniappe)

June 22, 2015 • 5:10 am

And so another week begins. If all goes well and I don’t die in a car crash, one week from today I should be in Colorado. But of course whether I live or die in that way has already been determined.  Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, Hili is eating god knows what; perhaps Malgorzata will explain in the comments.

Hili: I won.
A: What did you win?
Hili: I managed to tear it away from the ground.
A: And now?
Hili: And now I will eat it.

In Polish:
Hili: Wygrałam.
Ja: Co wygrałaś?
Hili: Oderwałam ją od ziemi.
Ja: I co teraz?
Hili: Teraz ją zjem.
And lagniappe: a photo of Hili and Cyrus on their walk by the Vistula yesterday:

  1. Looks like she’s eating gras.
Old folk lore in Germany says: A cat eating gras means rain! That would be very welcome, or poor Jerry would experience an “Out of Cherry Pie Error”.

      1. The grass looks like Quackgrass, Elymus repens, judging by leaf width and what few inflorescence traits are visible. Note that the inflorescence is a spike. Poa have panicles.

When I used to prepare bird specimens at home for the museum, my cat would respect my defensiveness of the bird. He’d watch closely, but not try to grab it while I was there. When I prepared grass specimens, though, he would keep creeping up to chew them. It seemed he could understand defending the bird (food) but not grass.

    1. When one of my d*gs noms on grass, she’s not really eating it – it almost appears as if she’s flossing her teeth. She also likes to pull pieces of leaves from various plants in the backyard (especially in the vegetable garden), so who knows. Sometimes I think she does it for attention, and just to be naughty.

  2. It’s probably not been determined Jerry. There are some quantum effects influencing daily life, so it might be random. But even if it is out of your hands, drive safely!

  3. Has there been any rain? We have finally had some in London – grass is brown & when I walked in Regents Park there were huge cracks in the ground…

    1. We had a nice rain two days ago and Jerry’s pies look safe. Possible a new rain will come in a moment because just now the clouds look promissing.

    1. Yes, grass is terrible for cats and dogs. I don’t know why they insist on eating it. Maybe it’s like chocolate to them & they just can’t help themselves.

    1. To quote various Kzintosh, sneering at Puppeteers, “How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a blade of grass?”
