Wednesday: Hili dialogue

May 20, 2015 • 5:00 am

It’s Hump Day—and Book Day +1. The Albatross is doing well, I think, as now iz real #1 in both religious studies AND evolution. That must really piss off the Discovery Institute!

And, indeed, the Albatross has flown so far that Hili seems to see it in Dobrzyn (it is, after all, partly dedicated to her):

H: Is it possible that I see the Albatross?
A: Sometimes faith is stronger than facts.

What a noble cat!
In Polish:
Hili: Czy jest możliwe, że widzę albatrosa?
Ja: Czasem wiara jest silniejsza niż rzeczywistość.

  1. Congratulations, Professor Ceiling Cat!! The Albatross is off and running at high speed. That’s great, because anything that pisses off the Discovery Institute can’t be all bad! I am anxiously awaiting my copy, although Books-A-Million seems a bit on the slow side at delivering…

  2. Great that the book is doing so well at amazon! I am disappointed in Barnes & Noble, though. I just received an email saying my (pre)order has been delayed!! Why?! Did anyone else order with them? I bet the book is just available in their stores. The good thing would be of course if the delay is because of the demand, but really, for a pre-ordered book … ?

    1. PS I realize now I might not have the book in time for the Politics & Prose event, that I thought of attending …

  3. Jerry, I thought you might like to know that my review of Fact Vs Faith will be in the British newspaper the Independent on Sunday, this coming Sunday (May 24th).

    1. Yay! At last a respectable venue is reviewing it. So far the only review in a mainstream secular venue has been in the Chronicle of Higher Education (by a religious scholar), though there were nice reviews by Hemant Mehta on his site and M. Dolon Hickman in the Humanist. Send link when it’s up.

  4. Well those of you who got Albert yesterday must surely have been feverishly reading through the night & now finished!

  5. Told ya it would do well. I’m the blind seer until my cataract operation.

  6. Received my copies an am delighted. I ordered four can am in the process of judiciously distributing them where I think they would get the most exposure. I have contemplated chains like the monastery model of a library.

  7. Dear Dr. Coyne,

I received email from Barnes & Noble this morning informing me that they’re unable to ship my preordered copy of Faith Versus Fact “due to an unexpected delay”, and that they’ll notify me if they “cannot acquire the item(s) within 30 days.”*

Could you call them and find out what this is all about, and if possible urge them to find and ship me a copy ASAP?**

    Many thanks.

    1. I received the same email, see my comment above. I am going to write them an email – I am hugely disappointed that they cannot send out a pre-ordered item!

  8. Congratulations. That is wonderful. Look forward to reading it. Have a more than good education in genetics and evolution but am woefully behind in more recent developments.I admire your crisp, accurate writing and I am sure the book will be a pleasure in the very best sense of the word.

  9. Probably won’t get much done today as there is more reading to do on this new book that came out yesterday. And today I see it’s time for the pod cast over at Sam Harris with the guy who wrote this book. Good thing it’s raining.

  10. #352 in Books

That’s actually a damned good showing, especially for a first day! Makes one suspect it may well break into the top 100….

  11. I got an email from Amazon saying my copy has been dispatched – now I have to wait on the woefully slow US postal service.

This problem was supposed to be alleviated by ordering the Kindle version as well. When I checked why that hadn’t arrived it was because I’d never ordered it – it’s not available on Kindle in New Zealand! 🙁

So I just have to be patient. I suppose I’ll just have to ponder the benefits of delayed gratification. 🙂

    1. ” When I checked why that hadn’t arrived it was because I’d never ordered it – it’s not available on Kindle in New Zealand! :-(”
Got the same problem here in Oz – ebook sellers won’t acknowledge that there is an ebook (went off direct links from the penguin website). Short of hacking my account so that I appear to be from the US (and risk my current library being taken away from me), I’m stuck waiting until that changes.

  12. Right now The Albatross is both #1 and #2 in Evolution which is pretty impressive even for such a relatively small section. Congrats, Jerry!
