Wednesday: Hili dialogue

May 6, 2015 • 4:43 am

Okay, today is Wednesday, and that means that our Philomena will be explaining British politics on BBC2 tonight at 9 pm. British readers—be sure to catch it! My back, sadly, still hurts; any improvement is small and incremental. I am going to hurl if I have to sleep on my back one more night—which, sadly, I am ordered to do. It is not a comfortable position. But I kvetch.

Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, we have a Social Justice dialogue. As Malgorzata explains, “Hili is ‘privileged’. She knows this and will not flaunt her privilege in front of an (under)dog. So she pretends she cannot go out because the poor dog can’t.”

Hili: This gate limits our freedom.
Cyrus: You can always go out.
Hili: But I am politically correct.

In Polish:

Hili: Ta brama ogranicza nam naszą wolność.
Cyrus: Ty zawsze możesz wyjść.
Hili: Ale jestem politycznie poprawna.

  1. Twoje zdjęcia Hili dodatkowe piękne były ostatnio!

Your photos of Hili have been extra beautiful lately!

Somehow I think google translate is failing me here… 🙂

  2. Not so bad! Hili understood everything. She just put the words in the right order:

Piękne były ostatnio twoje dodatkowe zdjęcia, Hili.

    1. Feline and a language tutor? Does this cat’s abilities have no end?

      1. Well, as an Editor-in-Chief of a rather serious website Hili’s abilities go much further than to rather trivial problem of correcting a sentence.

    1. And in Ontario, people (mostly religious as far as I can tell) are pulling their kids out of school because they don’t like the new sex ed curriculum. On CBC, one interviewee even admitted it was because our premier is a lesbian so she must have an agenda. What is happening? The Toronto Star provided a series of answers to misconceptions about the curriculum, many of which were distributed in Arabic. You would not believe the lies: saying things like the class teaches kids how to masturbate.

        1. Our Premier, Kathleen Wynne, (for those who don’t know what a Premier is, she is the leader of the Province), introduced much needed changes to the sex ed. curriculum in Ontario. Religious groups flipped out. Many opposing are Muslims who actually sent around lies about the curriculum in Arabic to the Muslim community. Here is the Toronto Star article I referenced.

Of course, some of this is motivated also by the fact that our premier is openly gay.

          Here are some other articles:

Background on the changes our Premier introduced

      1. Do we now add the Peoples Republic of Alberta to the Peoples Republic of British Columbia?

  3. Well, for the ultimate kvetching joke to cheer you up – just don’t laugh too laud or you’ll hurt your back. Two older Jewish women are sitting on a park bench in silence. After a while, one of them says ‘Oy’. There is a further silence, then the other replies ‘Oy’. Another pause, then the first says ‘Alright already. enough about the children.’

  4. Awww Hili sticks by her pal!

Ugh back pain. Progress is slow but you’ll be back to normal soon. Just keep on with the drugs. When I inflamed a disc, my back would spasm in the morning while brushing my teeth. I just had to hold on to the counter and wait for it to pass. The morning was the worst because of stiffness over night.

  5. So sorry to hear about your worsened back problems, Dr. C. While the painkillers ease the pain, it’s important to not let your guard down and re-injure your back. This often happens with painkillers, so your patience will be tested. Would the doctor approve of a special wedge pillow which could make it a little more comfy for you? They’re available at bed and bath outlets and on Amazon, and good for when you need to sleep on your back but need some elevation for, say, acid reflux issues.

Or perhaps the doctor wants you to lie perfectly flat on your back, so it’s his/her call.

    1. P.S. This wedge pillow, if approved by your doctor, will make getting out of bed much easier. You roll unto your side, hook your foot by a middle bed leg if accessible, and push yourself up with your arms.

I sure hope this is not a partially slipped/ruptured disc or something horrendous like that. Wishing you relief, Dr. C.

      1. I’ve used a wedge pillow for years because somehow my back hyper extends when I lay on it. I’m afraid that it could be because of my big tushy. I hope it is because I have a hyper flexible pelvis (ballet during growing).

I got it at some geriatric store when I was in my late twenties or early thirties. Ugh. It is true you are only as old as your spine. I must be 108.

        1. You poor soul, the issues you have, D.

Bed Bath and Beyond carries these pillows so does Amazon, in case anyone wants on. Really comfy and can be flipped up on its end, for reading in bed.

        2. You poor soul, the issues you have, D. I couldn’t handle all that pain.

Bed, Bath and Beyond carries these wedge pillows (so does Amazon as I mentioned before), in case anyone wants one. Really comfy and can be flipped up on its end, for reading in bed.

          1. Having a big tushy/ hyper flexible pelvis isn’t a very big burden. I’m going to get the reputation of a whiner.

  6. Back extensions. I had recurring almost incapacitating back pain (hard to lift myself out the bed) about 4 inches above my tailbone. A few sets of back extensions cleared it up immediately and every few months when it recurs. I was told it was probably due to increasing blood flow. Dunno if it would work in your case or if your doc would advise it, but it’s saved my 40’s from chronic suffering. Hope that helps somebody, truly for me the solution was way too easy.

  7. So sorry ’bout the back! Yesterday afternoon mine was actually basically back to normal, but it’s stiff again this morning.

    Hang in there!
