Friday: Hili dialogue

March 6, 2015 • 4:34 am

The work week (for punters) is nearly over, and although we’ve had only a smidgen of snow in Chicago, it has been below the freezing point the whole time. People are talking more about the weather than at any time since I’ve been in Chicago (1986), and they want winter to be over. My response is, “Well, at least we don’t live in Boston.”

Meanwhile in Dobrzyn (Poland!), winter looks as if it’s receding. Hili, as usual, whiles away the time wheedlng her staff for noms. I won’t fat shame her, but let’s just say that she could use a trip to the gym.

Hili: This is a very special occasion.
A: What’s the occasion?
Hili: The time eat something scrumptious.

In Polish:
Hili: To jest bardzo szczególna okazja.
Ja: Do czego?
Hili: Do zjedzenia czegoś dobrego.

  1. Hili might be a very tiny bit overweight, but on the other hand, she is a sturdy country cat in her winter coat She is big-boned. As for the gym, she can still leap onto desks and windowsills with ease, and she can take a camera strap by surprise with her lightning reflexes. Her fettle was never finer.

      1. She looks gorgeous! And what’s this obsession with weight anyway when she’s clearly healthy and happy?

  2. When I took my fat tabby to the vet, the nurses there didn’t want to “offend her”, so they referred to her as a ” heavy” cat instead of being blunt and just saying that she was fat.

We put her on a diet and she went from 15lbs to 9lbs. Took 2 years to lose that weight, perhaps even longer. It was a long time ago. She died in 2009, from organ failure. She was the sweetest, most beautiful kitty I have known.

  3. I am a bit confused – what do you mean by punter?

    Possible meanings:
    A gambler or bettor.
One who oars or poles a punt (pontoon).
    One who punts a football.
A customer of a commercial establishment, frequently of a pub or (alternatively) of a prostitute.
    A beginner or unskilled climber

    1. Customers – visitors to the site, as opposed to PCC who works every day at academe, this here website, plus wiping the bottoms of students, etc…!

      1. Oh, like how Scott Walker “punted” on the question or whether or not he accepts evolution (followed by audience laughter – wonderful!).

And to Hili, well… big is beautiful!

  4. A certain rondeur in cats is not a huggable offence.

But I wouldn’t want her to try thin spring ices…

  5. Hey, c’mon! Many mammals, including humans, put on winter weight. It melts off in the spring when we become more active.

  6. I’m so sick of winter. It’s all because the consistent daily -20C weather for February was just too much. We usually only get a couple of weeks of that in the winter. Last year we had the constant snow on top of the cold. This year, there has been a lot of snow but not as bad as last year. I feel like even me, the whitest of the white, is starting to get vitamin D deficiency!

    1. Diana, to speak plainly, that sucks.

I live in western BC, and this winter has been really mild. Until now!! The beginning of March has been -10C every day, with even worse wind chills. Its depressing. Its no -20C, thank CC, but it is still utterly demoralizing. I want to be outside, in the sun, doing things. Anything. Sigh.

      1. We live in the Okanagan valley of BC and thanks to a mild El Nino we have had the warmest winter in many many years. Temps most days in the 5 to 10 degree C. All the driving ranges (golf)have been open for a couple weeks now.

        1. I am in the West Kootenays. Had a lot of rain a few weeks ago, with many roads washed out. One lady even lost her house, as the mud hill behind it slid…onto the house.

          1. It snowed here once, about three years ago, for almost ten minutes. I thought it was pretty. 🙂
