Wednesday: Hili dialogue

March 4, 2015 • 4:56 am

So much to write about on this site: so little time. There are a gazillion things I’d like to post about today, but I have a day job and a Science Paper to write, and no idea how I’ll be able to fit all this in.  There’s John Gray’s misguided attack in the Guardian on atheist morality, Bill Nye’s recantation about GMOs, the New York Times Opinionator column on objective morality, Jeffrey Tayler’s new analysis of the Chapel Hill killing. . . .oy!

Whatever happens, though, we must have our Hili, who seems to have a strange idea of what “working” means. (My own caption for this would have been, Hili: “Does this position make me look fat?” Cyrus: “Yes!”.  But Grania says I should not be fat-shaming cats.)

Cyrus: Are you sleeping?
Hili: No, I’m working.

  1. I can’t believe I have this opportunity to make the first comment to a post here! And I’m wasting it by just saying so? I must be pretty bad off.

  2. I hope your post about John Gray makes it eventually. I like John Gray’s philosophical critique of human progressivism and agree with him on many things. His assault on atheism, however, I think goes slightly too far (and actually reflects some of the biases he accuses atheists of having, which I find disappointing because it doesn’t seem very consistent with the rest of his writing). I’d find it very interesting to read your reply.

      1. LOL! True, less slightly, more massively too far. I find it so frustrating because I think his philosophy is so refreshing. But I read his article on atheism with my head in my hands.

Furthermore, how many more defenders of the faith are going to deliberately misquote Harris to get a cheap shot at his “defence of torture” as if this characterises all the outspoken “new atheists”. I expect so much better 🙁

    1. I was slightly jolted out of my complacency
in believing that progress in science-technology-medicine will be accompanied by progress in ethics and politics with your reminder of John Gray.It seems that progress in society( as well as in evolution) may be a myth after all.

  3. Yes, we must have our Hili. I’m glad to see that you have your priorities straight.

  4. Sleeping is hard work — just look at how few Americans get it right! And it’s not like you can hand the job off to somebody else to do for you….

  5. Look, let’s get this settled. Any cat in a chair or on a desk that is normally used by one of its staff for work purposes is also, by definition, working.

  6. A funny bit Ricky Gervais does:

“Does this make me look fat?”

“No, your fat makes you look fat.”
