Thursday: Hili dialogue

February 19, 2015 • 4:38 am

Well, I see by my weather app that it’s a balmy -6ºF outside (-21ºC), but that’s still one degree higher than the all-time record low temperature for this date, set in 1936. UPDATE: It’s now -7ºF, so we’ve tied the record, though the news reports say that, with the wind, it feels like -21ºF (-30º C). I’m about to go out in it, and have donned extra layers.

Nevertheless, the relentless cold has led officials to close all public schools in Chicago today, though of course the University of Chicago will remain open. (We’re not weenies!) Meanwhile in Dobrzyn, the weather is balmier and Hili is spending some time outside. But she still gets restive at night, and becomes a bit mischievous:

Hili: Is this lamp anchored securely?
A: You’d better not try it.
Hili: Could you stand under the lamp and be our safety net?

When I asked how a chubby Hili could get up there, Malgorazata replied, “Hili is as agile as she was when she was slimmer. She jumps on the small cupboard which is on the veranda, from there she jumps on the hanging wicker shelf and up to the beam under the roof. She comes down the same way.”
In Polish:
Hili: Czy ta lampa jest porządnie zawieszona?
Ja: Lepiej nie sprawdzaj.
Hili: Czy możesz stanąć pod tą lampą i nas asekurować?

  1. What!? Closing schools because of the cold?! Though I am not opposed to the idea, I’ve never experienced it. They used to make is go outside for recess in weather like this.

      1. No. I think when it was this cold we just had on our snow suits & slid around in the snow & built snow forts.

      1. My teachers just wanted to go have a smoke in the teacher’s lounge. They really resented the kids taking away their time. My mom used to drop me off at school early (around 8:00 am) because she had to go to work. The teachers were inside but I wasn’t allowed in so I had to hang around outside by myself until it was regular school hours.

These days that would never be allowed – my mom would have to arrange for a baby sitter.

          1. They weren’t closed in my area as I saw lots of school buses on the way to work and the people I work with who have kids still had them in school.

    1. I remember my high school getting closed for the cold because the temperature went below 10ºC/50ºF, but I think the radiators weren’t working. The town I grew up in had a sub-tropical climate – there were quite a few normal items of clothing I’d never owned let alone worn until I left home. University was ruined by being constantly freezing and my not having the clothes to wear and having no money to buy more.

      1. Yeah, I’ve experienced NZ north island winter in homes and businesses without central heating & I’ve never been colder in my life!

  2. A balmy +40 F (+4.44C) when I woke up this morning. It took some willpower to get out of my nice toasty water bed.

      1. I could never figure that out either. They are much less expensive than mattresses too. My hypothesis is that people don’t know how to fill the bladder to the right level for their comfort.

I’ve had the same water bed since about 1990. Several times my wife and I have considered getting a knew mattress type bed, guaranteed to be well over $1000. But, every time it always comes down to just not wanting to give up the comfort of the water bed.

The only PITA with a water bed is the sheets. Particularly if you are active.

        1. I tried a water bed in a furniture store in Midwest in the 90s…. One minute Awesome experience I never forget. :))

  3. -27 C without any wind chill and the kids are at school. My grandson walks. Of course none of the cool kids buttons his jacket!

  4. Cold weather is discouraging…. 🙂 15 minutes walk is not too bad. The weather report of NYC is almost the same as prodessor Jerry’s.

    1. I made the terrible choice of avoiding the shuttle bus from the parking lot in favour of walking in. It was all up hill & I thought my face & legs were going to freeze off. I walked to my car at the end of the day but it was down hill. My face & legs still felt like they would freeze off!
