Owl and albatross cams!

There are two birdcams of interest today. First, a Great Horned Owl pair in Savannah, Georgia (Bubo viginianus), has laid several eggs and the first owlet will probably hatch today, as there’s a pip out of the egg already. This YouTube video should show you the live action; the site is hosted by the Skidaway Audubon Society.

And if that wasn’t cool enough, a magnificent Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) on Kauai, Hawaii, already has a 3-day-old hatching. You can see it below:

  4. I.. I think I want to hug that owl, even knowing that under the fluff is a hooked bill and 8 sharp claws.

  5. Seeing Laysan Albatrosses in the wild was definitely the highlight of visiting Kauai last year for me. They’re like gulls on steroids; such superb flyers. The Laysan Albatross also has one of the coolest Latin binomials around.

  7. Bubo is the silliest genus name for the most-un-silliest creature. Roman mice probably did not think it was silly though: “Bubo! Curre!”

  8. Webcams focused on wildlife are frickin’ awesome. Nesting birds are the perfect subject too since the subject is usually within the frame.

  9. YouTube isn’t working for me ATM, but I do usually watch these cams. When the albatross cam has a zoomie, you can see that there is another hen sitting on a nest in the left background. When adult albatrosses walk by, their gait is a bit like drunken sailors.

  11. WOW! I just saw the owl whip her head around 360 degrees at the same time some birds were peeping. Now it’s left the nest, there’s an owlet in there – that they just zoomed in on… and what appears to be dinner. Perhaps a headless chicken chick. Really cool stuff. Now THIS is what the Internet was made for!

  12. I love Kauai. I go every year. The Laysan Albatrosses can be seen pretty much daily from Princeville or the lighthouse at Kilauea. You can also see Nene (Nenes?) all over the place in Princeville. Down in Hanalei (and really all over most of the island) there are wild chickens and beautiful roosters walking around everywhere. The roosters will wake you up in the morning. On the south shore in Poipu there’s a resident monk seal who hangs out on the beach a lot. Also lots of sea turtles in the water if you get further off shore. I love Kauai. My favorite place on earth. Especially Hanalei. Hanalei bay is beautiful and definitely not over developed. And plus, Puff the Magic Dragon lives there. I’ve been trying to get picture of Puff and the wildlife there for years (to get posted here), but I’m not a great photographer and all I have is an iPhone. Nothing has been good enough quality to send to Jerry. I’ll try again next year.
