Just to be contrarian. . .

LOL! A photograph from Stephen Barnard of Idaho, regular contributor to “readers’ wildlife,” with the caption:

I don’t expect you to post this on your ailurophilic, misocynistic web site. 🙂 (Look it up.) I’m emailing it only because I like the photo. Deets is my best friend and constant companion, but he hates to have his  photo taken. He’s cool with cats.

Note to readers: This site hasn’t changed, so don’t inundate me with pictures of d*gs!

    1. Those eyes! Those whiskers! What a beauty!

(“What? Who, me?” with only slightly feigned humility)

  1. Classic portrait of a classic d*g.

“Constant companion” is good. More than “good.” I was actually without Baihu all morning…he had his teeth cleaned. And it’s actually a bit terrifying at how the house was instantly not home without him.

But he did great and all his teeth cleaned up sparkling white. And he’s already spent lots of extra time on my shoulders this afternoon and inhaled his food even more vigorously than usual, if that’s even possible, so all is well again.

    1. My dog had her teeth cleaned when she had her canine tooth removed (she killed it – went black – I suspect from dragging a huge bed of hers around the house). I figured they might as well clean them while she’s under.

I give her chews from the vet that have enzymes in them. They recommend 2x a day but I give them only 1x day except on Sunday (for Jesus). They are $30/package & a package lasts a month this way. They seem to help too. Cuts down on tartar & her teeth are a nice white. Of course, she also chews nylon bones, a nylon spikey stegosaurus & sticks from outside.

      1. I was given a few of those enzyme chews from my vet recently as one of my pooches had a lot of plaque. They gave them as a “sample”, but after chewing one a day for three days, I didn’t notice any difference to his back teeth (where most the plaque was). Maybe I need more than 3, but I’m glad to hear that you’ve noticed a difference. I guess I’ll just have to buy a package of them to find out for sure.

        1. I think what is supposed to be good about them is they get in between the teeth when they chew. My dog still has plaque on her molars but not as bad as my other dogs I’ve had & her other teeth are nice and white with no plaque on them.

          1. Thsnks, Diana. Those look great. Do you need to get them at a vet’s?

We’re currently in Augusta, GA, for a graduation. Hiked bits of the Appalachian Trail on the way down, where it was colder in sw Virginia than home in Southern Ontario.
Muttnik gets a bit neurotic about eating when we’re travelling and I forgot to bring her toothbrushes. She tips her bowl of kibble over with her nose, all over the motel carpet. If we bring her back enough leftovers from our restaurant meals and put these on top, she might deign to eat the combo untipped-over. Sometimes Ramen works, praise his Noodlyness.

          2. Yeah for some reason you can only get them from a vet. I’ve looked all over for them elsewhere, hoping to find cheaper ones. I have to get the XL because my dog is gigantic. There are some for kittehs too & they have veggie based ones.

          3. Verrrrrry interesting.

I have a friend whose cat got…plugged up…from eating too many “greenies.” One of many reasons why I’ve not gone anywhere near the tooth-cleaning chewable treats.

But Virbac / CET is the same company that makes the toothpaste that Baihu already loves. May well be worth a package.

            Thanks!

          4. Normally I wouldn’t give my dog rawhide but these seem to be good and I only give one a day (except on Sunday for Jesus). I was impressed with them.

          5. Well, both a package of CET cat tooth treats and CET water addition are on their way from Amazon, so we’ll see how the experiment works out….

  2. What a nice looking d*g! Deets looks very much like our beloved ‘best of d*gs’ Max. We used to have to spell a lot of words around her since she knew a very large vocabulary of human words, and she was always very intensely watching and listening to us.

  3. Wow. I never expected that, Jerry. Deets thanks you. (No, he really doesn’t. He’s cat-like that way.)

Bipetual is a new word for me, and I suspect for many others — one that well describes my frame of mind.

        1. Deets objects to being compared to a slug. (No he doesn’t — he doesn’t know what that even means.)

Banana slugs, which I used to see often when I lived in CA, are beautiful creatures.

          1. I wouldn’t call banana slugs beautiful…especially when there’s a whole bunch of them crawling through your compost:-(. I guess they are doing their job

  4. Deets is gorgeous!! My west highland terrier MacLeod (there can be only one) sends his regards to Deets. It takes all my restraint to follow your wishes and not inundate you with a photo of Cloudy Boy. (MacLeod loooves to have his photo taken, so I have no shortage of them…)

  5. Border Collies are such wonderful friends. Beautiful photo, and it has made me think of my dear friend Cosmo – a rescued BC who only wanted to be good.

  6. There’s no better reason to suspend normal operations around here than a beautiful Border Collie.

How’d he get his name, Stephen?

        1. Aha…I thought that name sounded familiar. A great novel as well…books are always better, right 🙂

  7. I had a dog like that once.  It used to bite anyone whose surname began with “M”

    Paul Dudley

  8. Most cat-like dog I ever met was a little black schipperke who ‘co-housed’ with a couple I knew. Neat, alert, quiet, devastatingly efficient destroyer of rodents, and most of all self-sufficient.

  9. A friend of mine have had a series of collie woofs and, I have to say, they are absolutely wonderful d*gs and amongst the most intelligent. (Having said that the current collie, Sam, is a complete muppet and decidedly soft in the head …….)

  10. What a nice looking pooch! My dog is my constant companion as well. I often wake up with her on the bed, waiting for me to get up. As soon as I’m awake she nudges me and snuggles though sometimes she slaps me with her big paw too.

  11. Very nice portrait. B&W was the perfect choice.

We have a couple German Shorthair Pointers (my parents breed them). I don’t leave home without them…well, most of the time anyway. But my wife and I are also bipetual…we just don’t have a kitteh at the moment.

  12. My Deets is a beautiful d*g, well put together. He’s independent, and only barely tolerates me telling him what a good boy he is, although deep down he likes it.

  13. He looks like the dog that miraculously showed up in a piece of ice a few days ago. It was a prophecy!
