At long last The Denver Cat Company, which I’ve boosted before, is about to open. December 12 is the date for the official opening of North America’s second cat cafe (Oakland beat them by a whisker), and since I’ve supported the venue, I’m letting readers know that there’s a place in Denver (3929 Tennyson Street) where you can go, have a latte or espresso, and pet the rescue cats at the same time. I’ve done that in a cat cafe in Vienna, and it’s a great experience. Time passes quickly when you are playing with cats and drinking java, and you can’t help but leave in a good mood.
Here’s the DenverCatCo FAQ sheet, and a reader who goes and gives a detailed report with photos will get an autographed copy of WEIT (with, of course, a cat drawn in it).
To celebrate the opening, and the realization of Sana Hamelin’s dream (she left her job as a lawyer to found this place), here are some cat cartoons and videos.
First, here’s a cat outsmarted by a pigeon, and discovering that it doesn’t have any “backing up” genes:
Second, a nice cartoon:
Finally, a kitten reacting to the trailer for the upcoming Star Wars sequel:

I only live 100 miles away … so … I hope to be the first to give a report to you, Professor Ceiling Cat …
I ate lunch once years ago in a café in Egypt where cats were allowed to walk around freely. It was wonderful, except that the person sitting next to me had cat phobia, so I couldn’t encourage the cats too much.
Thank you for all the cat stuff. It keeps me plugging away at trying to understand the science. I look upon the cats as my reward for struggling with the articles that are now and then slightly over my head.
OK, I admit that the articles are now and then way more than “slightly over my head”.
I’m surprised that NatGeo hasn’t complained about the Denver Cat Company logo.

Not likely to make it to a cat cafe anytime soon, but I will be sure to toast Denver’s success with my next cup of civet poop coffee.
Are the cats at the Denver Cat Company adoptable?
If not, I foresee a possible new opportunity for no-kill shelters. Fund them through a good coffee shop. People will presumably become attached to favorites — and in any case some needy kittehs will be getting lots of attention.
In which case I do hope they’d have a photo wall featuring the shy introverts who would freak out among strangers, though. They’re needy, too.
I look around some more and answer my own question:
Same is true at the Cat Town Cafe in Oakland, CA. All the cats are adoptable.
The Oakland Cat Town Cafe (http://www.cattowncafe.com/) is also staffed by adoptable kittehs – Cat Town itself is a feline rescue organization. The cafe, which opened October 25th, has had great success getting cats adopted out (32 cats in 15 days, according to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle on November 17th).
I think this is a US idea – my impression of cat cafes elsewhere, especially Japan, is that they do not have adoptable cats but provide an opportunity for those who like cats but cannot keep one (e.g. renters) to socialize with them.
I’m afraid that pigeon would have been history had he goofed around our outdoor/garage cat.
The cat does have backing-up genes, just not turn-around-like-a-ninja-genes.
although he did eventually manage to turn around, if not quite like a ninja…I once had a rather dumb (but sweet) kitteh named Puddyfoot (don’t ask). He would tear up a tree and not be able to figure out how to turn around. His coming down was fairly pathetically ungraceful. (he also liked to chew on the toilet brush – grosssss)
Getting down from trees is of course a common problem.
Pets often have gross behaviors. All of our dogs would come running when they hear one of us blow their noses. They very much want to eat the snotty tissue…:/
good deal of protein in that snot. It’s not as if they’ve internalised Germ Theory. And I’m not sure it would pose a huge threat to them anyway.
Currie loves snotty kleenexes and hankies:-(
Business end of the bog brush, or handle?
business end:-((
Delightful.
Congrats on the opening! I was wondering if it would be realized since the topic hasn’t come up for a while. Thanks for letting us know it lives Jerry! I hope it is a great success. I don’t live in the Colorful State, but I have a friend who lives in Littleton and he likes cats. I’ll tell him to check out your Cafe.
For some drink ideas, how about these:
Shangri Cat Latte (extra frothed whole cream)
Calico Coffee (add caramel, cream, and chocolate)
Siamese Coffee (infuse with coconut milk)
Siamese Tea (infuse with lemon grass or kaffir lime leaves or galangal…or a bit of each?
Manx Macchiato: no ingredient emphasis, just a cool alliteration and I love the look of a Manx. Dunno why. And who doesn’t love a macchiato.
The Scottish Fold: an Espresso with a little scotch. Sacrilege to scotch to be sure, but you probably can’t sell alcohol anyway. This drink is just for the V.I.P.’s, “under the counter” type of thing.
Once it is up and running, please send photos as I’m sure Professor Ceiling Cat will publish them.
I nominate TeaTea* as an appropriate Manx-themed hot beverage.
*It’s a motorbike joke if you’re in doubt
Just don’t lose it on the bends.
