Why Evolution is True is a blog written by Jerry Coyne, centered on evolution and biology but also dealing with diverse topics like politics, culture, and cats.
Also “Chuffed” … you are sounding more and more like a Brit ! ( not that I mind)
Hee, yay!
Ceiling Cat humbles us with his grace. I wonder what the catalyst was for the uptick in subscribers? Maybe the cat genome post, or Greg Mayer’s excellent RNA discussion? Or is it just statistical noise?
The wildlife photos were exceptional this week, by the way.
In my opinion they were exceptional, that is. Said it like it was an objective fact.
π
I presume it was an objective fact that you thought so.
More than once I’ve been criticised on Facebook and elsewhere for being “judgmental”, as though that’s a bad thing. Being judgmental is something everyone does every day. Whenever you vote for one person instead of another, or decide to hit the “like” button or not, or decide you don’t like brussel sprouts, or prefer cats to dogs, you’re being judgmental. Invariably, when I’m accused of being judgmental it’s because my judgment differs from my accuser’s judgment.
We generally reserve the word “judgmental” for someone who is insulting something personal. “I prefer cats to dogs” is not judgmental; “I prefer cats to dogs because people who like dogs are pathetic losers who need constant validation and control” IS judgmental. “That isn’t a dog, it’s a cat” is NOT judgmental.
I suspect that last one is the where the trouble lies.
When people accuse you of being “judgmental” because you’re telling them they’re wrong about some factual claim, I think they’re playing a game designed to make you back off. They’re shifting categories. From what I can tell they usually don’t recognize the trick: they honestly believe they’re championing diversity and freedom of belief.
“…when Iβm accused of being judgmental itβs because my judgment differs from my accuserβs judgment.”
With just a little reworking, that would be a classic Ambrose Bierce definition of “judgmental.” Or a Twainism.

Must’ve been the Rocky & Bullwinkle licence plate post! π
Congratulations!
As long as you don’t feel it is a millstone, all is good.
Heartiest congratulations!!

I don’t think I’ve ever “followed”. That’s means you get it in your email, right? I don’t need to. It’s always there on my desktop to click on. I did once delete it after Jerry put me on permanent moderation. But then I thought “what the hell….”
You’re off moderation now. Sometimes I’m slow about these things. Sorry.
Thank you. (:
Same with me. I come here every day first thing after scanning the online NYT & Guardian. I should imagine the number of regular readers is at least twice that of the Followers. Not to mention those who “follow” by receiving Jerry’s Twitter posts. WEIT must be one of if not *the* most popular science sites on the WWW.
By the way, when “Faith Versus Fact” is published will there be a new web page to promote it or will WEIT change its name to reflect the latest publication?
yup … WEIT is normally second or third in my morning routine. BBC, Telegraph, WEIT, Guardian, Guido Fawkes is my typical viewing, although the order does change.
For me, its Astronomy Picture of the Day, then Sandwalk, then WEIT, then some others. But that is only b/c that is the order they appear on my toolbar. Its WEIT that I really look forward to.
Thank you, BillyJoe. Now I know what “sub” and “following” means. I wasn’t sure, because like you I just click on the link every day, once or twice or … maybe more.
I don’t like to check my email.
When I first started reading this site, I thought “sub” meant the person had put their comment down thread. That, of course, made no sense. It took me a while to catch on to what was going on. π
Yes, I have a pinned tab that I click on just after I’ve checked my email.
“I’m number 30,000”
“I’m number 30,000”
“I’m number 30,000”
“and so’s my wife!”
Congratulations Jerry!
I have visited this website almost daily since Darwin’s birthday last year, but have never entered myself as a follower.
Wait, I’ll ask my dog. He’s smarter than most humans, and better adjusted too.;-)
I changed my email address along the way so I think you are really only at 30,001.
Great news. Any reason for the sudden jump?
Can someone measure the average IQ of the subscribers? I suspect it is high.
Congratulations!
Congrats Professor.
Just for fun, look at in binary. I don’t know about you, but I might rather be subscriber 32,768!
Congratulations!
I’ve been around for a while, making me part of the 30K +.
50,000, here we come!
I guess I do not ‘subscribe’ since my email is already full. I just click on the bookmark in my toolbar.
I just click the link in twitter. π
Congrats! I signed up late 2013, and the number was around 27,000 iirc. I heard about the site from a progressive radio talk show that was interviewing a “blog reviewer”. I forget the reviewer’s name, but I remember him giving WEIT rave reviews. When I got home, I looked up the site and have been hooked ever since.
Jerry’s going viral!
Fun and educational site for sure. When do kittens outgrow the biting stage? Got an about 3mn old and she loves to bite my hands, face, arms, legs her toys sometimes. With 30,000 members should get some good advice.
It was me!
π
Seriously? It was me! It’s all about me! π
Congratulations!
