Wednesday: Hili dialogue

It’s Hump Day, and that means (yay!) ROOT CANAL DAY. Or so we’ll see when Professor Ceiling Cat gets a chopper examined by the Katzenzahnarzt this afternoon. But things could be worse, like in Dobryzyn, where Hili is suffering major food deprivation:

Hili: Did I have my breakfast?
A: You did.
Hili: So now it is time for a Little Something.

    I had a root canal recently. I will spare you the details but I’m glad I shelled out for it (I had a bad tooth year so I used up my insurance & had to pay $800 out of pocket) as it was close to becoming an abscess & who needs that? Plus my dentist felt bad for me and got me a gift bag of goodies which included a Yim Horton’s gift card 🙂

    1. I’d never heard of Yim Horton’s so I Googled it: I assume that’s Tim Horton’s, which I’d never heard of either. Founded by the legendary Maple Leafs’ defenseman! Nothing like a cruller after a good root canal, eh?

      1. Yeah that’s what I get from writing in a small box on my iPad. I think my iPad has jokes of its own it likes to make.

        I think I blew all the money on the card on coffee and maybe a muffin or two when I hadn’t had lunch (those things are fattening so they are a treat when famished only).

  3. I have had two root canals and found them less painful than are my semi-annual cleanings. Dental care has advanced, and continues to advance, so much since my childhood that I would wager my children will go to their graves with their natural teeth – of course, it also helps that their sugar consumption is a fraction of what I was putting away when I was their respective ages.

  4. I had a root canal done a few years ago, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it wasn’t nearly as unpleasant as I’d feared. The main discomfort came from having to lie there with my gob wide open for about 40 minutes. Not something I’d want to go through again, but not an experience to be dreaded either.

      1. My dentists has plastic wedges he uses to keep one’s mouth open; your jaw doesn’t get tired at all!

        2. For me they did that too. They also used a complicated dental dam & my mouth is way too small so they have a hard time getting stuff done in there. I feel like I have a guinea pig mouth!

          3. I like the work bets do! You can’t even see my dog’s scar from her getting spade. My dad has huge scars from his thoracic surgery though!

            However, a guinea pig is considered an exotic pet so it would be hard to find a vet 🙂

  5. Good luck with the root canal. I had one done a few years ago and was surprised to find out how computerized it had become. I found the whole process quite interesting – and not painful.

  6. Ooh. Judging by what may or may not be coming out of Hili’s tail end (I am hoping that is just a shrub), it may or may not be a good idea to feed her right now. Might be best to give that digestive system a little rest.

    And good luck with the (potential) root canal.

  7. Endodontics (root canal treatment) should be painless as the pulp (nerve) of the tooth will be dead. If it is simply dying the process may be painful as it can be difficult to get sufficient analgesia, but once the pulp is removed there should be no more pain.

    2. Mine was very painful because there was a lot of inflammation. My other one was a piece of cake but the last one was 5 hours in the chair & really hard to freeze it so I had no pain. Glad that is over!

  9. I had one in my 20s and just remember the nails-on-the-blackboard sound of the little corkscrew thingie taking what I assume were the roots out of the canals:-(

  10. I’ve had a couple and agree with most here–no big deal. I’m sure a few patients have worse experiences, but I think the norm is that they’re no more uncomfortable than most other dental procedures, and often less so.
