Google Doodle: Day of the Dead

November 2, 2014 • 6:59 am

Today is the Día de Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, a celebration and remembrance of ancestors and friends that happens once a year in Mexico. Last year I was lucky enough to be in Mexico City on that day, and it was a stunning display of skeletal gruesomeness and artistic ability, as seen in the many bizarre floats on display in the main plaza.

You can see the Doodle here, but someone has also put it on YouTube with the note, “An animated celebration of Day of the Dead. Music: ‘La Bruja’ as performed by Little Jesus.

Et voilà:

  1. Listen to the following YouTube rendition
of La Bruja, “The Witch” to get into the spirit
of things. Unfortunately it ends with the
brutal reality of developments in modern Mexico.

      1. It is one of my wife’s and my favorite Mexican
songs. For some reason the violent scenes are
appended to various renditions of songs. We think the musical presentation on this one is most authentic.

  2. Actually, here in the US, it’s not Dia De Los Muertos. It’s All Saints Day, when we honor all saints, known and unknown. I guess in Mexico that’s gone away.

    1. November 1 is All Hallows Day, i.e. All Saints Day. November 2 is All Souls Day, i.e. The Day of the Dead. In Mexico, Dia de los Muertos, i.e. Day of the Dead, is celebrated on both November 1 & 2.

      1. Actually, Nov 1 is “Día de los Muertos Chiquitos”, meaning specifically those who have died during childhood.
