It’s National Cat Day!

October 29, 2014 • 8:49 am

As reader Linda Grilli informs me, today, October 29, is National Cat Day. By “national,” I assume they mean “U.S.” or even “North American.” Also, it’s described in a kitty-litter site, so I thought it might be bogus. But that repository of everything true, Wikipedia, verifies that every October 29 is National Cat Day:

The National Cat Day website states that the holiday was first celebrated in 2005 “to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their life for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us.” The day is supported by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a nonprofit organization which also works to encourage pet adoption.

There’s also an International Cat Day (which I remember mentioning), but that’s on August 19.

Now you know that Professor Ceiling Cat has no felid, and that he really wants one. So, as a favor to me, I’d like you to give your cat special fusses today, at least if you’re in the U.S.  Pets are appreciated, but treats and catnip are even better. Put below what you’ve done to celebrate, and send me any photos of the celebration.

One problem with the above: cat love is hardly “unconditional”! That kind of love is for d*gs.

  1. Oops – we had Rommel (our three month old Burmese kitten/little varmint) neutered today. But we will be sure that all of our feline masters (N=10) get appropriate attention

  2. 🐾🐾🐾
Fred’s had some good face scritches while “meatloafing” by my pillow. Also a few well-deserved tail-lifts. Friday is usually catnip day around here, but maybe we’ll give him an extra sprinkling today.

  3. Sadly, I do not have a cat. I will, however, give extra fusses to the neighbor’s cat, who they often ignore.

  4. “today, October 29, is National Cat Day”

    Too late!
Where I live, today is October 30, the day after National cat day.
I didn’t do anything special for my cats yesterday ):

  5. My current cats do not react to catnip. When I try to get them interested, they give me that “What the hell” look that cats do so well.

  6. Now that the weather is cooling down, I am again called on to fulfill my main purpose on this planet…providing body heat for my two cats.

  7. I’m glad you pointed out the ‘unconditional love’ error. Cats encourage us to be better people by returning love mainly to those who are kind and attentive.

Grover got lots of rubs and treats this AM before I left for work.

  8. Gus has had his nails clipped today and has gone in and out of the house on demand. He is now sleeping in the laundry.
    Happy National Cat Day!
    🙂

  9. I told our cat that this was National Cat Day. He wasn’t interested. He just wanted his chin rubbed.

  10. Unfortunately my cat Shirley had to be ‘put to sleep’ last Friday (kidney failure + other stuff + advanced age) — but today I took her leftover boxed litter, food, and toys to a friend so that her cats might celebrate.

    1. So sorry to hear about Shirley, it’s such a tough thing to do. I’m sure you gave her a wonderful life. My sympathies for your loss.

    2. RIP Shirley:-((. So sad to lose them.

I’m glad that you stipulated that it was leftover BOXED litter which you took to your friend…

  11. October 30th has been designated National Black Cat Day here in Britain by Cats Protection, the cat welfare charity. This is an annual campaign to raise awareness of the wonderfulness of black cats, who are less likely to be adopted from the charity’s shelters than cats of other colours.

My wife and I were devoted servants of a beautiful black cat named Molly for fifteen years, until old age and infirmity took her from us three years ago. We still miss our little pocket panther.

  12. Bummer! Ignorant of the “holiday” today, I took a semi-feral kitten I’m working to socialize (and will likely adopt because I’m becoming so attached to her) to her very first vet appointment today. There was a terrifying (for her) struggle to be corralled in the carrier and drive to the vet–but once there, she loved all the attention and purred through the appointment (even the thermometer). My gift to her for the holiday is to leave her in peace for the rest of the day!
