Rembrandt and anatomy

A few days ago (at Jerry’s suggestion!) I highlighted my imminent appearance on Adam Rutherford’s BBC TV series ‘Beauty of Anatomy’, in the episode on Rembrandt. Someone has now uploaded that episode onto YouTube. Watch the episode – not for me, but for Rembrandt and Ruysch, and for Rutherford, who is excellent in this episode.

[JAC: Watch for Matthew, too! He shows up at 12:05 and again at 18:22. I must say that I’ve never seen him this dressed up before! And it is a very good program.]

  1. Great video. My kids lasted 14 minutes, then abandon. Anatomy should be religiously forced upon kids so they see that we are machines who, when oberserved from the inside, provide secrets to living a healthier life.

  2. I was spellbound by the first episode in the “Beauty of Anatomy Series.” Adam Rutherford is a great and informed guide. The experts are nicely used throughout.

I was struck again by our wondrous architecture and how it was studied so early when tissue preservation was a major issue.

About a year ago I read “The Anatomist: A True Story of Gray’s Anatomy” by Bill Hayes. I’d never thought of who Henry Gray was or what motivated hims to do this and I didn’t know of his illustrator, Henry Carter.

Gray left few tracks (most of his belongings were likely burned upon his death) and Hayes respects the little evidence available. While writing it, Hayes attended two or three anatomy courses at U Cal-SF and weaves these experiences very nicely into the book.

    Thanks for posting this.

  3. Watched the Rembrandt episode on the iplayer. It was excellent!

Thanks Matthew and PFF for highlighting this.
