Also recommended would be Sagan’s original Cosmos (I haven’t seen Neil’s reboot so won’t comment, though I’ve heard good things about it) and Attenborough’s Life on Earth.
If you’ve got all three under your belt, you’ve got a decent minimum level of scientific competence.
