Monday: Hili dialogue

March 3, 2014 • 4:54 am

This afternoon I wend my way back to Chicago—presuming, of course, that the weather permits (which it should).

Hili: I wonder which burns calories faster: intellectual work or sleep?
A: It depends on what you’re thinking about.

In Polish:
Hili: Zastanawiam się, co szybciej spala kalorie, praca intelektualna czy sen?
Ja: To zależy o czym mylisz.

  1. I love the way Hili takes her meals on the window sill. My feline friend eats her breakfast on the top of the stairs (where her water bowl must be kept) and her dinner is eaten in the kitchen with the humans. Funny little creatures. 🙂

  2. If you’re sleepwalking, sleep wins.

If your intellectual work involves attempting to come up with a strategy and tactics on the fly in order to capture your prey so you might eat it, intellectual work wins.

…but sleep deprivation is a significant factor in obesity and all other sorts of unpleasant health conditions. Americans are generally chronically sleep-deprived, sadly.

But cats, fortunately, rarely suffer from insomnia (can you imagine?) and generally aren’t compelled to force themselves awake for stupid reasons like driving for hours just to sit in a miserable cube to crank out meaningless reports before driving back home for more hours in order to sleep for not enough ours.

Of course, there are those (too many!) cats who need a forever home, and whose sleep surely isn’t as plentiful nor as restful as those with staff….
