Jerry Coyne is growing

February 25, 2014 • 6:02 am

Would you like to look at all my baby pictures? Well, you’re gonna.

Reader Gayle Ferguson of New Zealand is fostering an abandoned brood of five kittens: four females, including three tabbies and a ginger cat, and one male, whose name is Jerry Coyne.  Here are some pictures of the brood, concentrating of course on my namesake. He happens to be very particular about noms:

I finally found a wet food brand that the kittens are enthusiastic about eating! Well, all but Jerry Coyne, who refuses to even try Whiskas Kitten Tuna Loaf.

Jerry weighs over a pound!

Yes, Jerry won’t eat Whiskas Kitten Tuna Loaf.  He is the only kitten who won’t.  But he’s very cute and he continues to grow, weighing in at 620 grams on Saturday.   Of the others, Hoover has the most interesting personality. She seems to have the real killer instinct.  Yesterday she caught and killed a piece of duct tape and carried it around in her mouth, making growling noises when other kittens tried to take it from her…

Heeeere’s Jerry:

Jerry does like milk and dry noms. In fact, as you see, he likes them to excess:

Jerry’s girlfriend, with whom you saw him snogging in an earlier post, is named Isis Carter, after one of Gail’s friends who also foster-parents kittens. Here is Jerry sleeping with his inamorata. Isn’t she lovely?

Jerry encounters the book by his namesake. He looks a bit daunted:

Jerry Coyne is fastidious (the headshot from this photo will be my Twi**er icon for a while):

And of course, like all kittens, he sleeps a lot. . .

Sometimes in awkward positions:

Is he cute or what? (Negative answers will be trashed.)

If you’re a Kiwi and want to adopt Jerry Coyne (you must keep his name) or one of his four littermates, contact Gayle in the comments or through me.

  1. I don’t know anything about cats, but am more curious that I’ve heard/read/seen no follow up of the Carroll/WLC debate this past weekend. I wonder why.

    1. I was out and didn’t get to watch it, but there were plenty of comments on the thread where the readers watched it in real time. When it appears on YouTube or a similar place I’ll watch it and comment.

The consensus of readers is that Carroll did a terrific job, which is a good feat in light of Craig’s rhetorical skills on the platform.

  2. Our new kitten, 13 weeks old, who looks ALOT like Jerry, made us so PROUD yesterday! He gave us his first dead mouse. He’s a spunky little character!

  3. Kittens are by far the most adorable babies of all! Jerry Coyne (the kitten) proves that. Paws down!

  4. Not generally into animal pictures and I don’t even like cats! But these are exceptional. I love the one of little Jerry examining big Jerry’s book.

    1. Not a problem here. One of the kittehs we live with takes her food from the bowl one piece at a time and sets it on the floor before eating it. Maybe that’s why she’s so svelte.

      1. Yeah, the wooden bowls belong to my adult cats. Jerry was eating their biscuits there. We tried a few different bowls for biscuits, but the best turned out to be plastic containers from Indian take-aways. The kittens like to climb in with the biscuits, and I have even seen them kneading them like they would their mother when drinking milk!

        1. Speaking of your adult cats–how have they reacted to the latest invasion? Or perhaps, to any forced segregation due to same?

          1. It’s summer and still pretty warm at night so my cats have been home infrequently. On the occasions when kittens have been out and my girls have come in the reaction has been bad. My cats are terrified and will run away. I have a bigger problem with a stray whom I feed outside my back door though. He has become more territorial and aggressive lately and is the main reason why my girls are staying away. I am working on getting him into foster care elsewhere because I can’t help him anymore without hurting my own.

  5. Since felid Jerry Coyne came on the scene I’ve watched a number of documentaries that included wee cubs from cheetahs (one had five), tigers, and puma. The cheetah cubs started this new mental bit in my brain — whenever I see these tiny little cubs now my mind thinks, “That’s Jerry Coyle!”. They all look like Jerry Coyle! They have spiky Kramer hair and miaow quite loudly (mouth bigger than head) clearly desiring more noms of any sort — not as discerning as wee Jerry Coyle — no tuna loaf indeed.

Congratulations Gayle — all the kittens look really nice and healthy. Alone I had to hand-feed five puppies (no sleep for three weeks), but had the mama to stimulate pee/poo and keep them and the whelping box clean. It’s a labour of love. I can imagine how hard you worked. Funny thing, you’re glad when it’s over but then sorta miss it. Must be the oxytocin.

And it’s good to see his education is starting off on the right paw 😉

As far as Professor Ceiling Cat’s comment, I don’t think wee Jerry Coyle looks daunted so much by the book, as he is contemplating the creatures on the cover as his prey. To be coming soon… 😉

  6. Awwww–picture of kittens with Mommy is so sweet…little critters with someone they can completely trust and without whom they’d be lost…thanks for the restores-faith-in-humans moment of the day, Gayle.

  7. I can tell that Prof CC is fighting against it … but I sense a northward trip in JC’s future.
And a depressing arm/ leg/ butt full of needles. But a lot of them he’s goging to get anyway.
