Idaho: first snow

November 17, 2013 • 4:40 am

This panorama from Idaho was taken by reader Stephen Barnard. It’s a huge, high-res photo, so keep clicking on it to enlarge:

His notes:

It was just first snow. Photo taken from The Nature Conservancy’s Silver  Creek Preserve, open to the public and well worth a visit. The photo is an a panorama created by the excellent app, Hugein.

  1. As always, an extremely beautiful image from Stephen Barnard! What really caught my eye looking this time was how many domiciles lay in the range of this photo. I had been thinking this the most rural of rural Idaho, and yet there seem to be quite a few people living in here. I guess this is a good opportunity to challenge my ideals of nature as completely devoid of human civilization. Anyway, thanks to Mr. Barnard for allowing some of us a vicarious experience with such natural beauty!

  2. This valley is a rich farming area — mostly barley, alfalfa, and cattle. I find it to be the perfect combination of wildness and settlement. There’s more abundance and variety of wildlife than you’ll find in the wilderness areas that are to the north. (The photo is looking north.)

Here’s a webcam in the tiny town of Stanley (where I lived for 12 years, about 90 miles to the north. It’s in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and is a gateway to the Frank Church Wilderness:
