The ASPCA website tells the story of “Nubbins,” the appropriately named rescue cat. He had tumors on his ears, was emaciated, needed a blood transfusion, and was peppered with birdshot. What a horrible life he had, and he surely had would have died without the big heart of the vet who saved him after amputating his ears (hence his name) and nured him back to health.
Dr. Patricia Wagner, a veterinarian at the ASPCA, performed surgery on the sweet feline and fell in love with his kind demeanor. Soon after, Nubbins joined Dr. Wagner’s household. He is incredibly grateful for his second chance and gets along swimmingly with the family’s resident parakeet.

Awww Nubbins does look deeply melancholic. I think he needs to see how other kitties live the good life so he knows how to.
I’m glad the story has a happy ending, but I’d still like to track down and slap around the asshole who fired the birdshot.
My daughter is an adoption counselor with an animal rescue organization; they see a lot of horror stories.
As she always says: we don’t deserve cats & d*gs.
That’s no parakeet, it’s a budgie.
I was thinking about the words budgie & parakeet when I read this & which term you use depends where you live.
My family lived with a parakeet whose favorite perch was sitting on the head of our English Bulldog. The dog, although slobberingly dear, was about as stupid as a bag of hammers, but never more so than when the bird was sitting on his head.
It’s apparently pretty common for outdoor kittehs to get skin cancer on their cute little white ears. Our old neighbors didn’t take care of their’s, so the neighborhood rallied for Fast Eddie and he had nubbins too, though I think by then it had spread and sadly he didn’t last much longer. So, if you must let your kittehs outside, think twice if they have white ears.
Looks like Nubbins might still be a bit shell-shocked. Here’s hoping he gets to spend enough time stretched out on a sunny windowsill to truly be able to relax and appreciate the good life.
