And the cat shall lie down with the duck. This is clearly play, though I’m not sure why the duck keeps trying to stick its bill into the cat’s mouth.

There’s a d_g in the background that desperately wants in!
Ah shucks, you beat me to it!
Hmmm it looks like the duck is either being dominant or displaying mating behaviour (which looks the same anyway).
It looks as if the duck wants to nuzzle bills and can’t seem to locate the cat’s…
That pink tongue probably looks like a slug or worm. Duck wants it before kitty swallows it for itself!!
Ducks are not good anatomists. Everything is either food, or not food.
I was going to say the same thing. The ducks brain is not even as big as a cats. It’s an automatic response. Looks like a ducks usual moms? Go for it!
Noms! Dan you autocorrect.
Not uncommon for a duck to stick the cat with the bill.
Ha! And that’s why you should never go to dinner with a duck!
lol. That’s a mating behavior. Maybe it’s been adapted… But I reserve some skepticism as I’ve seen roosters do the same thing, where they’d court and mate with rabbits, ducks and anything else they could hop on top of…

Could it be juvenile behavior? Ducklings are fed from the mouth of the parents.
If you have observed any such behavior it would be major news in duck biology. Are you sure?
tiger vs dinosaur
A kitten is closer to a tiger than a duck is to a dinosaur.
Sorry, but no. Ducks are dinosaurs, but kittens aren’t tigers.
A pasture next to our home is home to several emu. Once you have been able to observe an emu up close and in detail, any doubts about the claim that they are descendants of dinosaurs seem frail. In fact it seems very clear, at that point, that they are indeed dinosaurs. And that, just like in the movies, they are capable of ripping your guts out with those alarmingly impressive dinosaur legs, feet and claws.
Perhaps something like getting spiked by a rooster, only about six times bigger.
Err. Where did I get that from? That should be more like 15 times bigger, not six.
One word – cassowary. The first time I saw a cassowary in the flesh, I didn’t know what it was and described it as a “big dinosaur bird”. I think the cassowary is my favourite bird of all time just for its dinosaur appearance.
Indeed. Finding emus threatening is a sure sign of never having observed cassowaries.
There was an abandoned emu in the small preserve that I lived next to. In the winter the ground was covered with snow and I thought it would need supplemental food so I started feeding it. The emu was never aggressive and after it became accustom to being feed, it would lightly peck at my back when I was filling the food bowl. The emu had plenty of chances to attack me but it was never anything but docile. It was a wonderful bird with very ancient dinosaur like features.
Yes, our local emus have never exhibited any particularly aggressive behavior. In fact they often seem to exhibit curiosity, or maybe they are just hoping for hand outs. We always look forward to taking a walk over to the pasture and visiting them.
Would most cats try to kill a duck or is it too difficult to fight to be prey?
We used to have a cat that liked to hang out with our banty chickens.
Looks a bit like they are practicising judo.
Hmmm … this is reminiscent of “Any Little Fish” but I don’t remember a part about a duck and a cat – only a lion and lamb.
Cute as it is, I hope the cat is not disbarred for life as a member of the International League of Moggies. Playing with the enemy is one thing, playing with your food another.
Cats and ducks living together…
Well, I like it 😀
We had a pet duck raised from an egg and she was best friends with one of our cats. She would chase away our other cats though. This duck’s behaviour looks agressive to me, not like playing. She was biting the fur of the cat and trying to show him who is boss. Our duck would literally pet our cat, stroking her bill from his head down his side. And she would quack quietly and calmly while doing it. They would even nap side by side.
Awwww! 🙂
Aww, it’s a little Tonk…Tonkinese cats are great cats, so engaging and up for anything.
