We will beat Algeria cuz we haz extra help!
HALFTIME: tie 0-0. If we tie, we’re out of the tournament.
GOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! Helped by the kitteh, a dramatic win for USA in minute 91!

Ah – with the right catittude a purrfectly respectable score is pussible…
This is feline intervention!
Mano! Or is that “El Gato”?
Really interesting pair of games today. Everyone could conceivably go through. Slovenia only need to draw. England and the US really need to win – though a draw works if they get help from the other game. Algeria have to win and they need England to not win.
Go Slovenia! (Wonderful country – highly recommended!)
Wait! Foul! The cat is only allowed to use its rear paws!
At the moment the USA is set to go out of the competition. England are one goal up against Slovenia.
Wow – that cat of yours has a sense of timing. Congratulations USA.
Come on Germany! I want an England v Germany match. Although I’m not sure my heart can take it after that US game. Woohoo! USA!
It is all going according to plan. Mwahahahahahaha!
There you have it.
I had the NY Times’ live blog of the game open in a background window on my computer, while I worked in another window. As the game drew to a close, I was checking the live blog less frequently, as hope sank. Suddenly, with no prodding from me, the computer speaker erupted in a cheer: “YAAAY!!” I wondered what it could be. I then thought, could the Times have rigged it’s blog to emit a cheer on a USA goal? I switched open the window, and sure enough, the score was USA 1-0 Algeria!
Top of the group too!
Great job kitty – but honestly, you could have helped a bit earlier, yah?
🙂 I have to admit that I was more interested in the NBA finals than in World Cup Soccer.
But it is nice to see the US actually win a game and advance.
Felinecitations! Clearly the cat-as-trope was on the other team.
@ NEB: Soccer rules are clearly not made for non-humans. You may want to change that before suggesting unfairness.
For example, should using tails count as they do for humans (bouncing of the ass)? But wouldn’t that be unfair in a game eager beavers against playful kittens?
No, soccer (football) has simple rules that apply the same way, for all players, anywhere in the world, whether World Cup or young children.
Kittens’ forelimbs can not be allowed. A beaver does have an ass, which can be used, but not tails.
Just think of the advantage a team of giraffes would have on a corner kick! Of course they would also be limited to rear limbs and not forelimbs.
And awesome heads. No, I don’t think that is the way to fairness – but it’s the easiest way to play.
Um, so I won’t play “tag” with sharks. Ever.
OT, but this is a soccer / kitteh post, so I’m not being too brazen.
“Evolutionary creationists” is a preferred term to “theistic evolutionists.” From 13 Things I Learned at the BioLogos Convention. Doesn’t she know 13 is a bad number in the NT? I must say though, I appreciate the calling-a-spade-a-spade attitude.
Yes, good for them and good for use. Let us all adopt the convention.
But it still has nothing to do with evolution since even if you include evolutionary mechanisms the supernatural (creationist) element void prediction. (In other words, you never know when ECs will claim “creation”. Actually that article discuss this as “drawing the line”, as if _that_ would be the problem. Cognitive dissonance.)
Can’t we just call it “poser creationism” and get it over with? 😀
Oops. “good for us”.
See, there is a God. And He loves America and heart attacks.
Good luck in the next round. Don’t think England are going to make it.
Perhaps not but stranger things have happened. If they do manage a win against Germany they most likely will face Argentina next. What more motivation do you want?
Wow! An American who watches football! Sorry, soccer.
Anyway, congrats, USA! Especially for knocking England down a peg.
Yank, if you please (we don’t want to be confused with those Cananadans) and thank you!
I’ve heard that if we win the tournament the world has to call it soccer from then on.
I had a cat who not only followed the ball around on the monitor, but went around to the back of the tv set if it went off-screen…
I’ve seen cats my parents had try to get things that should have come out of the side of TVs- one was fascinated by snooker.
