UPDATE: I have put the names of the 13 Mystery Owners here.
______
Reader Amy writes that she came upon a Tumblr site that features famous people with their cats. (Is there any subject that doesn’t have a Tumblr? And don’t forget that Hili has one too!)
There are actually 31 pages of photos, but I’ll present just a dozen people whose identities may not be immediately obvious. Try to guess who they are: I’ve numbered them from 1 to 12 (and thrown in #13 to make a baker’s dozen).
I will not provide answers; either the readers will establish a consensus or you can go to the Tumblr site and find out.
1. We’ll start with an easy one:
2.
3. Amy said that this cat looks like it needs rescuing!
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.
12. I know my nephew will get this one!
As a bonus to make a baker’s dozen, here’s one I’ve shown before. Shame on you if you don’t recognize the man!
13.
And an extra bonus, here’s Larry, the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office (an official British title), with Obama and Larry’s staff. Sadly, Larry has been pretty much of a washout as a mouser, so has his staff as P.M.

Is that Stanley Kubrick at number 6? i cant recognize any of the others.
I think #6 might be Dan Fouts, but Iv’e never seen Dan scowl like that.
I’ve seen Chargers fans scowl like Kubirick
It is indeed Kubrick.
Allegedly he owned many cats and d-gs, but there are half a dozen photoes of him with cats on the web, and not any at all with d-gs. Perhaps he was more inclined to pet the cats and just let the d-gs roam around the house.
I have no idea who any of them are but I have just gone to bed after a big night of imbibing certain chemicals (one of them legal in most western countries and another in Colorado).
No. 8 however looks like the feline Jerry Coyne although it’s hard to tell the colour.
How could you leave out Dr. Evil and Mr. Bigglesworth?
The only one I care about mentioning is Freddie. Magnificent vocalist and frontman of the biggest rock group of all time.
Queen
Yeah, I recognized Freddie right away!
Ah, I wondered who it was with Delilah.
/@
Delilah, Delilah, oh my, oh my, oh my – you’re unpredictable
You make me so very happy
When you cuddle up and go to sleep beside me
And then you make me slightly mad
When you pee all over my Chippendale Suite
#10 = Jane Pauley, maybe?
I think I saw Alexander Graham Bell at 7 and Audrey Hepburn at 8. Other than that I’ve got no idea.
Okay, I suck at this.
1/ Maybe Redford?
2/ ??
3/ Christopher Walken?
4/ ??
5/ Freddie Mercury
6/ S. Kubrick
7/ Maybe Elizabeth Taylor?
8/ Marianne Faithful
9/ Mishima
10/ ??
11 Matisse?
12 ?? Lombard ?? –Someone my Grandma liked, anyway.
13 Klimt
I suck at recognizing famous people but those pictures are really nice. I like the first one the best. If I had a cat, I’d want to bring him/her everywhere. I’d be a total crazy cat lady. I saw a car the other day that had those decals for families and it was all cats. I wish I had taken a picture!
We designed one of those decals back when we had twelve cats and a 1988 Oldsmobile station wagon (complete with peeling “wood”). Then we found out how expensive the decals are, so we never had it made. But they are funny!
1 – Redford
2 – looks familiar
3 – Walken – menacing
4 – Teller?
5 – Mercury
6 – Kubrick
7 – Taylor – mmmm Rebecca
8 – Faithful
9 – Kurosawa?
10 – Pauly
11 – Asimov?
12 – Bette Davis?
13 – shame
11 – No. Asimov never had a beard.
I got Cocteau, Mercury and Mishima (says a lot about me I guess), but for the rebellious canidophile underground here – Herr und Hund http://bauschan.wordpress.com/
Thank you, that was fun.
That photo of Carole Lombard @12 looks like it was taken by my husband’s grandfather, Russell Ball.
Not sure if she was one of his clients, but it looks like his work. L
1. Robert Redford – although this could be the power of suggestion. When I first looked at it, Redford did not pop to mind.
2. Siouxsie Sioux – remember Siouxsie and the Banshees?
3. Christopher Walken – the eyes give it away
5. Freddie Mercury
6. Stanley Kubrick
7. Elizabeth Taylor
8. Marianne Faithfull
10. Jane Pauley – looks like from her days when she was still a local Chicago anchor
12. Carole Lombard
I know the other four but cheated – searched for the image.
I think you skipped #4…the one that looks like Teller.
I’m pretty sure bric is right, and 4 is Jean Cocteau. I should have recognised him.
— grumbles off into the distance, kicking dust.
“I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.” – Jean Cocteau
I skipped the ones I did not know.
I have no idea who #9 is, but I find it heartening that someone whose office looks like mine could be famous. An old boss told me a messy office was a sign of a disorganized mind. The office pet whose desk was clean as a whistle never actually did anything resembling work, so I didn’t take her criticism to heart.
It’s Yukio Mishima, who committed ritual suicide (badly) after his attempted takeover of the Japanese army didn’t take hold the way he intended. Not sure if that indicates an organized mind but he was a great writer (but don’t read ‘The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea’ if you are sensitive about cats).
Just read his wiki. Interesting fellow. Perhaps he would have turned out better if he’d had a d*g.
Surely the first photo is Robert de Niro,n’est-ce pas?
Stanley Kubrick was famous for loving cats, as well as for having written and directed the finest movie ever made.
#10 is Jane Pauley and the cat is Meatball. That picture is from page 13 of Bill Hayward’s 1978 book Cat People (ISBN 0-385-14313-3, LCCN 77-16921). The book is comprised of 77 photographs of then-well-known people with their cats and a commentary from the owned human on the facing page. Since picture is at least 36 years old, Meatball is, most likely, no longer around to enjoy the notoriety.
Here is what JP said on page 12:
Jane Pauley is known for having been a co-host of the Today show for 13 years, followed by a 12 year stint on Dateline NBC. Her husband is Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau.
I recommend the book, especially the final portrait on page 157.
Error: “Since picture is at least 36 years old” should have been “Since the picture is at least 36 years old”.
5 is Fred Mercury of course.
6 looks like a young Pavarotti.
11 looks like the very rich, famous, and Guinness-record holding purveyor of fortune cookie wisdom and inspirational schlock Paulo Coelho.
I agree that 6 looks like Luciano.
At the link, there is one of Kate Bush upside down and half hidden behind her cat. But I still recognised her instantly from her eyes. Equally the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen (in a dead heat with my wife’s)
nice recovery
7 doesn’t look like Eluzabeth Taylor to me. Does Jerry have the answers?
Yes I do, and it is Elizabeth Taylor. (She was young.) I’ll put the answers on this thread tomorrow.
2 looks like Kate Blanchet and 4 i think is George Orwell. 11 looks more like Freud than Paulo Coelho to me.
11 looks like James Randi to me.
Most of them I’ve no idea. Freddy Mercury and his lip-mounted mouse are unmistakable, of course.
#13 – Anthony Hopkins in a Shakespearian doublet?

Sorry. I meant number 7 is Miss Taylor.
Number 3 looks like Christopher Walken.
Number 11 is possibly Constance Bennet
Yes, I think 11 is Matisse.
