I do not need “likes”

December 9, 2025 • 12:00 pm

I do appreciate readers “liking” posts or comments, but the problem is that each one generates an email to me, and there are many of them. The result is that my inbox is even more clogged up than usual, and that sometimes makes me miss messages.  So I’ll kindly ask readers to please refrain giving “likes.” If you especially appreciate a post or something I said, please show it by leaving it in the comments after a post, or sending me an email if you want direct contact. Many thanks!

  1. I’m confused. There’s a way to like something here at WEIT? Got to be honest, the lack of a “like” button is one of the many things about WEIT I like.

I guess i don’t understand and if im guilty, my apologies. It was entirely by accident.

  2. Do the comments NOT generate emails for you? I know they do for my site on WordPress. But they, like the “likes”, get put in the “social” section of my email, and it’s easy enough to see from looking at the inbox which ones are just “So-and-so liked your post [fill in the blank]”. And getting likes encourages whatever algorithm is involved to share the site to other people who might not have seen it (I know, for you that’s probably not really a goal). It’s also just a way to show that, yes, I liked the post, without having to write an annoyingly long comment, like this one.
I guess I just don’t have NEARLY as many readers, so it’s hard for me to appreciate it as a problem. I apologize for my part in clogging up your email.

    1. I don’t know what happened. Only moderated commenters have emails sent to me with the comments (which I nearly always approved.) But all of a sudden I’m getting a gazillion “likes.” I think WordPress changed something. Not that it’s not nice to be liked, though!

      1. Boss I wonder if it might be linked to your twitter account?

Sometimes tech companies merge and that kind of thing happens…

As you know I’m a loudmouth here, were it twitter I’d hit “like” but I’ve never seen such a button/option here.
Which is good! – for many reasons this is thankfully NOT twitter/x.
Not sure where your email prob is coming from, I’m no techie!

(feel free to “like” the hell outta me here: https://x.com/DavidandersonJd )

  3. Hmm, the “Likes” may influence your site’s ranking and visibility in search engines. I don’t really know. But in my experience, search engines use every bit of data available when deciding what sites to show a user in response to a search. Proportion of (honest) “likes” relative to visitors would be a great clue to a a website’s quality.

  4. I think (?) people forget that commenting even to say I approve is an historical record that not all were a bunch of dumb arse followers of idelogical fashion.
Someone well into the future will mine these data.

  5. I’ve never seen a ‘like’ button on this website – either on my browser or my phone. I find it funny that some people would have this feature when other people don’t. Maybe it’s about the browsers we use or whether we have android or apple.

Anyway, as long as people continue to see like buttons, I suspect that they’ll keep clicking them – either because it’s an instinct or because they haven’t seen this post!

I think if you want to avoid emails you’re going to have to find the setting that disables them. I’m sure the option exists, since forcing people with busy websites to be inundated with emails would make WordPress very unpopular. You should post a question to WordPress support.

  6. There are check boxes at the leave a comment section that will generate emails to the commenter. Could they be involved in this problem?

  7. I’ve not seen the “like” button on WEIT, either. Like other readers, though, I don’t utilize the WordPress app. I have “app phobia”. The fewer I have, the better I feel. I go diretly to the website and read content in my browser. I wonder if some readers may have begun “liking” posts after you (Jerry) expressed your dismay at what you interpreted as a lack of interest in Caturday Trifecta?

  8. I’m not one to click “likes,” but I almost broke character on your X page today. I really admire the vigilance with which you hunt down the hawkers of illegal sea-turtle products on eBay. However this became a passion of yours, it’s a noble cause.

  9. I’ve never seen a Like button (Firefox on a Mac) on WEIT.

BUT, I do see a “thing with a face” to the right of the cat on the post in the header photo of this article. A sad man’s head lying on its side in the snow….
