Well, winter is still two weeks away, but tell that to the clouds. Last night it snowed several inches in Chicago—and it’s still coming down. The streets seem impassable, putting the kibosh on my plans to do grocery shopping today, and I’m out of the essentials at work, including peanut butter and tuna.
But it’s still lovely. Here, for example, is Botany Pond. I hope the turtles are hibernating safely despite the pond’s gravel bottom.
My tracks on the way to work. Could you identify these as human tracks? It looks as if I was weaving drunkenly, but I was just avoiding certain spots.

Using Holmesian analysis I have to ask what animal goes on two paws planted beside one another, with an appendage of lesser import centered behind it, and levitates from station to station in that configuration. Hmmm. Elementary, my dear Watson.

I’ve seen tracks in the snow like those in the photos, so I have an opinion. I’ve seen how it’s done.
I arrived in Chicago at O’Hare airport yesterday evening and took the L into the Loop, where I had to walk a few blocks, pulling my suitcase along on its wheels, to my hotel. There was only one block that had not been cleared of snow. I left my hotel this morning unaware that it had snowed overnight and was perplexed to find stretches of South Michigan Avenue that had been clear just the previous evening now covered in slush. On my way to Hyde Park in a little while.
