  1. That impressionist is brilliant, his imitation is not only spot on, but he’s very, very funny.

I don’t know why this is suddenly an issue. In 1975, Sir Lenny Henry’s TV debut, on a talent show, was doing an impression of Sir Michael Crawford in his famous role as Frank Spencer of “Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em”‘.

He started with his back to the audience and talking like Frank, then, after a while, he turned round and revealed his race. I remember watching it at the time and it was very effective in making you question your own assumptions.

At the time there were programmes with white men imitating minstrels in black face on tv which were cringeworthy, it’s ridiculous to complain about the reverse. Henry didn’t even don “white face” to do it, he just relied on pure talent.

He won the competition, despite being a teenager, and then went on to greater things.

    1. I remember Some Mothers do Have ’em from the 70s (we got a lot of British and US shows in Australia). Very funny show.

      1. Michael Crawford was very good. Even nowadays when you say “Jessica” or “ooh Betty” in a certain way, or “the donkey done a whoopsie” many people just start to laugh i remember an interview where he said he played Frank as if he was a child, it was very effective..

  2. Fun-ny! But might there be negative repercussions for the soldiers who are laughing at the president’s expense? It’s not about how we feel about it, but about how the chain of command is obligated to respond.
