This is the next-to-last contribution out of several hundred sent over the years by biologist John Avise. and he’s coming to the wire with lizards:
More Lizards in SoCal. This week’s post continues my photos of various lizard species that I’ve encountered over the years on nature hikes here in Southern California.

Fantastic!
Great lizards photos. Growing up in Southern California, we would always get lizards in the house and have to catch them to put them outside.
Great to see all of these splendid lizards.
Wonderful, as always. Thanks!
Very nice photos. There are a lot of lizards in your neck of the woods- nice to live in a warm climate. Up here in Western Washington I’ve just seen northern alligator lizards and western skinks.
When I lived in San Jose as a boy, I saw a lot of Western fence lizards and we called them “blue bellies”…I can see the tell-tale blue on one of your photos. Nice remembrance of childhood.
Thanks for these photos! Note to self — must learn more about lizards.
This year we’ve had Fence Lizards in our yard, and I saw one leap six or eight times its body length across our little water feature. It’s funny because lizards don’t look to me like they are built for jumping; obviously they are, though!
Nice, we have several of these lizards (or very similar species) here in Klickitat County, Washington.
