Jesus ‘n’ Mo ‘n’ roots

December 18, 2024 • 9:00 am

Today’s Jesus and Mo strip, called “rooted,” is a good one, and comes with this note:

#ffffff to be precise. [JAC: this refers to the color white]

A reminder of the UK parliament’s proposed definition of Islamophobia:

Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.

Jesus is right on the money, but Mo is wrong in saying Jesus is an “old white guy” (he was supposedly around 33 when he was crucified.

  1. “…he was supposedly around 33…”

Heh. I’m remembering that you can’t trust anyone over 30. So maybe Mo is right here? 😉

  2. I’ve become rather tone deaf to the incesssant cries of racism; furthermore, it seems that many of those who scream about it the loudest are the ones most guilty of it. I’ve heard the old, white, guy comment numerous times: ageism, racism, and misandry all in one concise phrase.

The UK, like much of the West, is being strangled to death by its own ideologies. Best wake up sooner rather than later.

  3. Oof.

And – there’s a reason why there is no Jainophobia. And we know what would bring forth Jainophobia.

There’s that Hitchens quote (I’m in haste, so no italics):

“Why doesn’t it make them happy? Don’t you think it’s a perfectly decent question? Why doesn’t it? Because they won’t be happy until you believe it too.”

  4. That is a good one! Would also have been worth pointing out that Christian ideas get mocked and criticised all the time, yet no one cries Christianophobia.

  5. “Mo is wrong in saying Jesus is an “old white guy” (he was supposedly around 33 when he was crucified”

    Wasn’t life expectancy around 40 then? 😉

    1. I get the impression that the statistics on ancient life expectancy are skewed by the large number of young children and infants who died. I think if you survived to adulthood you had a good chance of living to 55 or so…

  6. Nicely done. The use of the term “Islamophobia” has been annoying to me for as long as I remember hearing it. I’ve commented on it before, and if I may be pardoned for repeating myself:

Is there any other term for racism against anyone other than Muslims that has “phobia” attached to it? I don’t know of one. (Not ignoring that there are non-racial examples such as sexual orientation, i.e., homophobia). They call it “racism,” but of course Islam is a religion, not a race, and Muslims come from many different races. If someone is attacking all Muslims then they are not attacking anyone racially. And the reverse is true as well.

It’s a nice trick, getting any critical word against any of them, of any nature, transmuted into an attack on their religion and therefore an attack on all of them. And any such attack, including on their religion, is merely borne of an irrational fear (phobia) and can be waved away without even pausing for a moment to consider the substance. And they get away with this legerdemain…

  7. It’s ignorant of the UK gov to conflate ‘Islamophobia’ with racism. Muslims are from many different races. It is not racist for me to criticise a fellow white Brit for following Islamic ideology. I criticise Islam regardless of the race of the individual Muslim.

Islam is an ideology, not a race. We must be free to criticise ideologies without being falsely accused of racism.

These links to UK and USA data prove my point.
