Well, thank you on behalf of my husband. But he is not the first one to use “autumn” in this manner. As far as I know the first was Johan Huizinga with his “The Autumn of the Middle Ages”.
The new English translation for the centenary a few years ago opts for “Autumntide,” but the book itself is splendid. Gorgeous color illustrations, over 300 paintings and prints—nearly all the artworks that Huizinga discussed in the book. For any who might be interested, here is both a text and a video preview:
