  1. Weightlifting starts today, with the men’s 61 kg followed by women’s 49 kg. Both of these groups could be really exciting. Possible new C&J world record and medal for Hampton Morris in the M61 kg group (He currently holds the record which he set a few months ago, and he has achieved more in training.), and a very tight battle between 3 of the women in the 49 kg group.

  2. Tomorrow I’ll learn if I’m going to be on jury duty. In the meantime I’m thinking about composing a new flag to replace my Biden-Harris flag, which I had designed and displayed for several years to express my continuing support of democracy, the rule of law, the separation of church & state, and the continuation of Enlightenment ideals (however imperfect their implementation has been).

I had wistful thoughts about a former astronaut being in the White House (even though he kinda reminded me of a Bond villain). But the Harris-Walz duo seems to have a good chance of neutering, at least for a time, America’s weird and dangerous dalliance with dictatorship. I’m all in on the new democratic ticket. Assuming Harris and Walz are elected, I will then be happy to address their shortfalls. In any case, my worries about Ukraine — and Europe — have lessened.

      1. Why, thank you, Jim. I don’t recall if you wrote anything about Mark Kelly. Having worked with NASA, what were your thoughts about him as a potential candidate?

        1. I did not know him. I think that much of what I know is from his brother, Scott’s book, Endurance. Looking at his Navy and NASA careers, he seems to be a straight-shooter, the best of what one looks for in character and capability for our astronauts. But as for what he would bring to the ticket in electability….that’s for the campaign pols to weigh as such things are well beyond me. From the political side, he has not (yet) developed that big, personable, open-face smile that John Glenn had.

          1. Thanks, Jim. From what I’ve read it seems that Kelly was a distant third potential choice in terms of being relatable, both to Harris and to the general public. I imagine, though, that his political cachet has increased from being considered VP contender.
