Photos of readers

Don’t forget to send in your photos, as did Andrea Kenner, pictured below. Her captions are these:

The first photo was taken at the Mile 39 marker of the Avon Walk in Chicago in 2016. I loved Chicago! Avon stopped holding their 39.3 mile walks in 2017, but I’m still part of the Sugar’s Trekkers for Ta-Tas walking team. We have trouble finding long-distance walks these days, but we manage! Our team was named for Sugarโ€”a team member’s cat who died of feline mammary cancer. Our team raises money in Sugar’s memory to support the Penn Vet Feline Mammary Tumor Study.

The second photo was taken on December 2, 2011. I was in a journalism class at American University, working on a team project to build an interactive website that documented the murals of Washington DC. Sadly, our website was deleted, but you can learn more about the Marilyn Monroe mural here.

      1. Do you do that in 24 hours? the longest single walk I have done was from Cromer on the north Norfolk coast, to Great Yarmouth, on the beach most of the way in August some years ago.

        1. The 39.3 mile walk was done in two days. The first day was 26.2 miles (a marathon), and the second day was 13.2 miles (a half marathon). This yearโ€™s 44 mile walk was spread over three days: 20, 15, and 9 miles, respectively.

      1. Your method may be even better:
But after several years of such difficulties, they have never happened to me again after wearing DoubLayer socks (spelling may be wrong) They are sewn together in two layers. The rubbing is between the outside of the inner layer and the inside of the outer. The other two layers stick to your foot (inside of inner) and stick to the boot (outside of outer).

        1. I tried Feetures socks, which are “guaranteed” blister proof. Guess what! They aren’t. I’ll take a look at DoubLayer socks though. It’s always good to have more tools for the toolkit! What finally worked for me was to apply KT Blister Prevention Tape before starting to walk.

  1. Great stuff, esp. supporting charity.

I’ve no idea where you’re living, but the Niagara Ultra in June is probably still very good, lots of distances up to 50K (31 miles) and entirely on the (Canadian side) paved walkway, no cars to worry about. If you register as a competing walker they do expect voluntary adherence to racewalk rules re lifting and straightened knees. But one can just enter, period. But maybe Niagara is a long ways away for you.

I do almost entirely nordic ski racing now, but twice did do a run-with-some-walking 50K in its predecessor (back in the last century!) and really enjoyed it. Then they used the whole 50K pathway between Fort Erie and Niagara on the Lake, and had 50K, 80K or 100K. Now it’s from the latter up to the Falls, then back, tougher because of the big hill up the Niagara escarpment. I’m afraid my charity stuff has just been the Terry Fox (yesterday, as it happens) most years this century. All the others are just my own ego, I guess!

    1. Thanks for the tip! I live near Washington DC, but our team members are all over the US. I’ll keep that walk in mind.

  2. Another post that substantiates my theory that WEIT readers are some of the best humans on the planet (myself excluded, of course ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). Thanks for your advocacy Andrea! Bravo!!!
